Sources: Piston-Thunder deal in works?
With the Detroit Pistons looking to get as far under the salary cap as they can this summer, and the Oklahoma City Thunder being one of the few teams who are able to help them shed salary, the two teams have emerged as natural trade partners, multiple NBA sources told DraftExpress this past weekend. With very few teams projected to have cap space this summer (Oklahoma City, Memphis, Portland, Sacramento and Atlanta being the main ones), it appears that Detroit could be in great position to take advantage of the strength of this free agent class and nab a couple of pieces that would put them right back in the mix to compete for the Eastern conference finals. Detroit is currently slated to be around 20 million dollars underneath the cap, but could shed another five million or so by unloading the contracts of Amir Johnson and their first round pick (#15).

Detriot need some new pieces, their current team just won't cut it.

I believe Joe D. is working overtime to make Detroit one of the top teams again. He is really making use of his options and he has so many.

It's either you build to win now or go further under and wait till next season to compete with 12 other teams for the big names. Just tank next season at least you get a decent draft pick... there aint no such thing as halfway croog...

I mean - unloading Amir Johnson ? that's the master plan ?
certainly his back-up forward position could be upgraded,
but he's making only 3 mil- I really don't think thats a big deal

Here we go again with the salary cap analysis. detroit needs help, but what do the Thunder have to help them? They aren't trading Durrant or Westbrook. If OKC had enough "pieces" to share, they would have more than 23 wins.

Really? Amir for #15? This is T&R worthy?

It is a big deal when you can unload that $3 Million and use it on a backup like Charlie Villanueva. That is a huge upgrade at the backup 3 spot. They need to unload some of those veterans if they can. I'm sick of seeing Rasheed Wallace play half of the time.

We could have gotten Amir for Joe Johnson last summer but Joe didn't pull the trigger. =(

Joe Dumars is smart and dedicated enough to bring this team back to relevance but still wont be able t o compete with the top 3 teams in the East.

The Pistons will be fine. Joe D has always been a wiz in the free agent market, the draft though, not so much. Trade the #15 and Amir and get what you can for them. Maxiel is signed long term so there isn't really any room for Amir anyways.

Is that half the time of each game, or half the time he is actually ON the floor and IN the game?

Okay not really sure whats the purpose of this but Rasheed, AI, McDyess and walter Hermann are off the books thats almost 40 mil, so I would be expecting huge up grade in those position to make the team better. Joe knows what he is doing! I have faith in the guy

As far as I can read, Detroit has nice trade chips in Amir Johnson's expiring contract and the#15 pick. If the story is getting deeper under the salary cap to sign to FAs. Then please, T&R, name the bigshots that Joe D. might lure to Detroit. Also, where exactly do the Thunder fit into this T&R?

I ABSOLUTELY hear that you're sick of Rasheed....
as far as CV- he ain't coming to mowtown for 3 mil...lol
hes not a 'stud' but he's going to get a 7-10 mil contract easy
-look at his stats 16+pts, 6.5 rbs.....
I'm not a big fan of his- but he's getting paid

Well said. I'm neither a fan of CV but his numbers warrant a pay increase and a starting job on a bad team that will never get past the mendoza line. Do you think he'll really get 7-10? I dunno, maybe he will but I was thinking more 6-8.

Dumars's incompetence is best described by two words: Darko Milicic.

what about the words '2004 NBA CHAMPIONS' ?
- he's not incompetant- he realized the 2008-9 pistons weren't going to COMPETE with the easts big 3 so instead of GUTTING the team- he decided to dump CB/salary- to try and make a run at a FA......
That's not 'incompetance' that's SMART BUSINESS.
-we'll see how 'dumb' he is when the season starts next year

What about when he traded for Chauncey billups and hamilton with placing bwallace at the center to win a championship, bold moves I think at that time. I dont like hamilton but the player Jdumars has made him you have to respect his game. They just need a consistant pf and a solid point guard, they have everything else once they upgrade, beware of the pistons

Nova, that is good analysis and I believe that Detroit would love to have Millsap and get deeper under the cap. Between Amir Johnson, Kwame Brown, and the #15 pick, you'll see one or two, if not all three get dealt. I also believe Millsap will be in Utah next season as the owner of the Jazz has publicly stated he'll go over the cap and pay the luxury tax to keep Millsap. As for all of the hype surrounding Ben Gordon, don't believe it. Joe D. likes big guards that can muscle the opponent and play both the one and the two. Ben Gordon does not muscle anyone and he can only guard one position (and not very well).
