09:40 AM ET 06.02 | It appears Wayne Gretzky has a vested, financial interest in Jim Balsillie's bid to acquire the Phoenix Coyotes and move the team to Hamilton, Ontario. According to the Toronto Star, court documents show that Gretzky could lose up to $9.3 million US should Balsillie's bid fail in the bankruptcy case. The report indicates Gretzky would receive as much as $22.5 million of the $212.5 million bid, including $8 million in deferred payments and $14.5 million to resign as the head coach of the team. Despite this apparent windfall, Gretzky has thrown his support behind a bid from Jerry Reinsdorf, the current chairman of the NBA's Chicago Bulls and MLB's Chicago White Sox.

I don't know about that, I mean just look at the pic

It doesn't matter how much money you have...losing millions smarts.
Wayne wants to stay in the game and enjoys coaching.
He has also always towed the NHL company line...so of course he is going to stay politically correct and back the Coyotes staying. Wayne will be in the picture long after Jim Balsillie is making bids for his 4th and 5th franchises...

1st: I always love that picture of TGO.
2nd: Who is TGO's accountant? Why wouldnt he be all about Balsillie's bid?

I live in Arizona most people do not know what a hat trick is. One guy thought it was when the fans tossed hats in the rink. I had to explain why and he thought hat tricks happen all the time.

Arizona does not care for hockey and the Coyotes have done nothing to educate the people here about the game. You see advertisements for the NBA, WNBA, NFL, College Sports but advertisements for the Coyotes nope. Maybe in Tuscon or Pheonix but no were else really.

I have heard that complaint more than once. Most people here did not know they had a pro hockey team until they heard we would be losing it.

No one cares for the sport here. Sad because I love it.

If Wayne is going to collect this money if they move to Hamilton, why would he say he wants to stay in Phoenix. I mean if no one cares in Phoenix than why say you want to stay and risk losing 20 mil........unless HE wants to stay. I can see why he wouldn't want to leave Arizona for Hamilton. I mean even if he lives outside Hamilton in Toronto, why would he want to give up beautiful weather, no pressure and is able to live a relatively normal life. He goes back to Canada, he can't leave the house without being mobbed.

June 2, 2009  11:15 AM ET

Don't forget Fretz is from Brampton... a team in Hamilton would be right in his old stomping grounds, but, like Elias said, he wouldn't be able to leave the house without being mobbed

June 2, 2009  11:38 AM ET

Hamilton cannot even fill their arena for the AHL Team. Balsillie deserves a team, but Hamilton is a bad choice. Milwaukee, KC or even Hartford would be better, but I expect the Islanders to become the ... what maybe the "Mallers". If Phoenix maybe won every once in a while and got to the playoffs it would be a different story. Sunbelt doesn't mean bad... Look at Tampa and Dallas.

Just 2 cents worth of thought

Makes sense. That team really needs to get the hell out of Phoenix.

You really have to hand it to whoever found that picture - captures the true essense of the man - kind of like the one of Mario crying his little eyes out

Wayne Gretzky shouldnt be coaching

bad players make good coaches

the problem in Phoenix, like the NHL as a whole, is no effort put into advertising. Hockey has everything Americans love about sport; speed, action, hitting, danger, occasional fights, and toughness, yet Americans could care less about Hockey in most areas. If the NHL was smart they'd advertise all these qualities a bit more.

June 2, 2009  12:55 PM ET

The problem in Phoenix, like almost everywhere else in the NHL, is non-existant advertising and hype. Hockey has everything American's love about sport; speed, hitting, danger, aggressiveness, grit, toughness, etc.. But sadly the NHL does nothing to tell people that.

Gretzky helped build hockey in the sun belt, now he will be helping hockey leave the sun belt. the biggest mistake he ever made was coaching. the greatest player ever to lace up the skates and now one of his legacys will be failure. sad

Gretzky was great, but Lemieux was better. It almost hurts to say that because I'm a Bruins fan and Lemieux almost single handedly cost the Bs two trips to the cup, both of which they probably would have won. Gretzky had a MUCH better supporting cast in Edmonton than Lemieux had in Pittsburgh.

BS! More propaganda from the Phoenix haters. I won't compare Phoenix to Detroit or the Canadian cities, not in the same league but understandibly so. And there are some dolts who haven't got a clue about hockey. But I'm willing to bet you could probably find one or two of those even in Hamilton. Phoenix has a long hockey tradition going back to the 70's with minor league teams. Add to that all the transplants from the north and you have a great base. All we need is a real team.

Please.

No athlete in any team sport has dominated the way Gretzky dominated NHL hockey. He retired with 63 offensive records.. that is right 63. He had more ASSISTS than anyone in history had POINTS. He scored close to 900 goals. Shave 900 points off of Lemieux and re-tally his totals. Get my drift? Of course Gretzky had a great cast, but every player who puts up records has a great cast. No athlete can do it alone.

Mario may have started out with a sad-sack team, but by the time they were Cup-ready, they had a very talented roster. Ron Francis, Kevin Stevens, Mark Recchi, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey, Joe Mullen, and the guy named Jagr all were stars that elevated Mario's stats as well. Mario was a great player, incredibly dominant and skills unmatched at times... but noone was parallel to Gretzky in terms of offensive numbers. And I don't want to hear the argument about the PPG, because that is skewed by the fact Lemieux had various health issues and didn't play nearly as long as Gretzky at an optimal level. Part of being great is the ability to remain healthy and leading your team. Gretzky only had health issues (back) late in his career, shortly before he called it quits.
