Less than a month from unrestricted free agency, Devils center John Madden told The Post there has been "zero, nada," discussion with New Jersey on a new contract. The four-time Selke Trophy nominee and 2001 winner said he is not discouraged by the inaction.

Madden is a royal pain to play against and I'd love to have this guy on my team. I can't believe the Devils are thinking about letting him go.

Nope. I am good with all of our Centres for now, although our third liner better start putting them in the net a little more! He is young, will give him a little time, but not much more!

Madden is a good checking line center. He has lost a step and in this NHL that is big. The Devils signed Zubrus to a long term contract and though I would prefer Madden to him, he is the one with the signed contract. So move Zubrus to the checking line position which he is better suited for and save the 2 to 3 mil that they would give to Madden. Will miss Madden but as Madden took Holik's job and Holik took Bobby Carpenter, it's what happens in the NHL.

Sounds like he's done in Jersey.

I know that pro sports are just a business these days, but being a lifetime Devils fan from NJ, it makes me sad to see a guy who gave his heart and soul to the team for so many years being treated like this. At least tell the guy you're not re-signing him, but don't ignore him.

Maybe NBC could sign him to announce games?

knowing Lou, he proabably asked for another $50 a week

His number should be retired by the devils, they better not let him go, hes been vital his whole career

With a player of Madden's caliber out there for relatively cheap, the Pens could move Staal to either Malkin's or Crosby's wing and still have a great defensive 3rd line center and add an excellent penalty killer. Just a thought, ain't gonna happen though.

he's been with us for to long. the devils can't keep playing the old way anymore. the devils need younger and faster players to keep up.i'm tired of all the expierence talk they need more goals in the net.

If Staal doesn't bring up his numbers, I am thinking he is getting traded next year, so..

June 3, 2009  09:09 PM ET

Over the years I have seen too many Madden breakaways that end in a little slap shot right into the crest of the goalie. This is not the old NHL where teams can match lines. All of a team's lines need to be able to generate at least a little bit of offense and maintain puck control. It's sad to say, but unless Madden takes a pay cut, he's outta here.

Non story. Madden hasn't been relevant in in three years.

Not quite sure why you Pens fans seem so down on Staal. I'd take him in a heartbeat on Deadmonton. 22 goals as a 3rd line defensive centre works for me.

Sorry DWI, but I beg to differ on Staal. He's only 20 years old and plays a very significant role on this team. The Pens would be crazy to trade him any time soon.
