Ortiz riding Red Sox pine for good?

Unless there's some lingering sense in the front office that a "vacation" can aid David Ortiz so that he might contribute something, anything, down the road (and oh, yeah, next season too) your full-time DH for the last 2-3 months of this season will feature the likes of Adam Dunn, Victor Martinez, Matt Holliday, or ... well, Julio Lugo is a better DH option, isn't he? The sight of Ortiz riding the pine, a pinch-hitting opportunity nobody wants to have to utilize, will perhaps be even sadder to witness than this prolonged slump. Imagine, come playoff time, if the Sox are fortunate to be playing in October, a postseason roster that does not have Ortiz's name on it. Barring some miraculous turn of events, that would be the case the Sox face in '09.

That's going to be a whole lot of money on the bench

If this continues for another month, the Sox will trade for a player before the trade deadline. Having said that, most people don't want to see Ortiz on the bench, but hitting .185 at the end of July is something the Red Sox will have to address.

I still can't believe what's going on with Papi. Maybe that wrist injury last year was worse then anyone suspected or was handled improperly. The only plus for the Sox is that not having a permanent DH allows options you wouldn't normally have to give guys partial days off and get bench players at bats to keep them sharper.

I think and hope Big Papi snaps his horrid streak before the end of the month

Big Papi has hit the wall. I give him a silent tribute.

this isnt the make a wish foundation but since you have hopes i do to, i wish someone would take ortiz behind the green monster and put him out of his suffering...

I'm not sure they can get a trade for him ... too big a salary wiht little production is not what any team wants ...

An excellent observation from the young Mr Cyder. I opined all winter during the Teixeira saga that I wanted the Sox to trade Ortiz, acquire Tex and use he , Lowell and Youkilis to man 2 defensive positions and DH. Boston would have had 3 outstanding defensive players for 1st and 3rd base and 3 very capable ofensive players to rotate at DH. Everyone stays well rested and there would be no days when you had to put a clearly inferior defensive player (Ortiz)on the field.

BTW Justin, last night I watched Ortiz strike out and he missed the ball by a foot again. I still don't think it's as much an issue of bat speed as it is eyesight.

I saw some of his at bats. The more I look the more I'm convinced steroids or lack there of has nothing to do with it. He's missing by too much. If he all of a sudden had warnign track power or his swing was too late for an 88 mph fastball maybe I would feel different.
I have no idea if he has done roids in his life, my personal belief is that a huge percentage of players tried them at one time or another. No one had an issue with greenies for decades.
Maybe the older players can't hack it without the uppers.

June 3, 2009  07:47 AM ET

no hgh, no roids or he is really 36 not 33.

Hippo's actually possess some blazing speed for animals of their girth. Won't work.
