Lawson falling down draft charts

Ty Lawson is coming off a rough week: Some GMs didn't like him in the combine setting, he measured the shortest of any point guard in the draft, and there were questions about his conditioning and a potential toe injury. Put all that together and Lawson seems to be the one guy slipping on a lot of boards. Two GMs had him ranked as high as sixth on their point guard list, but a number of others had him much lower, with two GMs ranking him 10th and one GM ranking him 11th.

Keep falling Ty... the Mavs await you!

June 3, 2009  08:09 AM ET

Next they'll be saying he's just 5 foot 9.

If he keeps falling then the more chances he gets to play for a better team. This means that he would have more drive to succeed and stick it to the teams that passed him. This guy is in the mold of Felton. Both are NC players and both lead their team to a championship. They were both doubted by teams. Lawson is hard nosed player and has great basketball instinct. He will be fine in the NBA.

Whoever he "falls" to will get a steal...

agree with everyone above-
he basically led a 'pro-style' college team to a title-
yes he's short- but he solid & absolutely has the ability to put
strength onto his frams- and he's lightning quick

he doens' thave the shot a pure pg needs (especially with his
height)- but he has the ability to lead a team...which is THE
most important factor- and we saw how UNC wasn't the same
dominant team they were WITH him in the floor

I hope your right because in the last 30 years tar heel guards that have been drafted to the NBA have amounted to SQUAT...check the history only one superstar "His Airness" and a couple of decent players like Kenny Smith,Hubert Davis,Vince Carter and Stackhouse have come out of Chapel Hill....

I hear ya-
but UNC aside- the bottom line is what is his value ?
if he is drafted with the INTENT of being a back-up & not a starter
- he's looked at differently-
Also - not going top 10 and being COUNTED on to turn the franchise around puts a LOT less pressure on you -rather than going say 25 to a team that is established - you aren't the 'savior', you're just a 7th man

Also not so fair to compare PG's to SG's ( though I know the list
isn't too pretty eother- Avery, etc)

Character is the other thing GM's look at: Ty put in for last year 2008 draft, then withdrew after he got a underage DUI

Marcus Williams stole computers........
talent trumps character every time.

Just because he led his college team to the title, it doesn't mean much. Previous PG in college champions with decent/ promising NBA careers in the last 15 years are only Chalmers, Felton, Blake, Jason Williams (well, at least pre-bike accident) and Bibby. Some good players, although not exactly all-star material - and that's 5 players in 15 years...

not sure what your point is.........
Magic Johnson, Isiah also won championships.

No one is saying being great in college translates to the pros
- look at Reddick, Morrison, a MILLION guys-

point is Lawson IS an NBA talent-in the right situation
maybe a bench guy....but he certainly can have a nice career

June 3, 2009  10:19 AM ET

Lawson is another of my favorites from this draft. He's only 5'11, but he's a true point guard with a good basketball IQ. His success will depend on where he ends up I have him at #10 to the Bucks, or #13 to the Pacers. Anyone can find trouble if you go searching for it, but let's just say Milwaukee and Indianapolis reduce the chances of trouble.

June 3, 2009  10:21 AM ET

lawson strengths obvisouly are his speed and ability to penetrate. He'll be a decent PG in the league. dribble penetration is key in today's nba......and i think he excels in that area.

June 3, 2009  10:25 AM ET

He'll be better than hansbrough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 3, 2009  10:48 AM ET

It'll make a good team better...

I didn't know there was a player named "Hansbrough".

June 3, 2009  11:19 AM ET

Ty won't ever develop into the typical NBA point guard. I see him having a T.J. Ford type of career even without injuries.

Then perhaps you should visit Google before coming in to attack someone.

There was this guy drafted third overall back in 1997. He was traded midway thru his first season. Then traded again times before he signed with a team that recognized his ability. The guy - Chauncy Billups. Lawson will be fine with the right team. It may take a circuitous route to get his career going but he's going to be fine. The so called experts thought Kwame Brown, Korlene Young, Omar Cook, Felipe Lopez and many many more where can't miss so what the hell do they know.
