NHL GMs can't come to a concensus on headshots. While they had a spirited debate during a three-hour meeting yesterday at a hotel here before Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final, league officials agreed to monitor the situation next season before deciding if further action needs to be taken. A number of GMs are concerned it will take physical play out of the game. Told the players intend to fight for a new rule on headshots at the competition committee, Toronto GM Brian Burke dismissed it.

unless it's a head shot at Bettman

That ust be a very small stage to get that "head sot" of the Poison Dwarf. Wouldn't mind seeing him take a few to the noggin.

Like the shot Cooke tossed on Helm last night? If Helm had a cabbage like Troy Aikman he'd have been down for the count.

Well said, Hank.

There is a big difference between getting punched in the head during a fight but a cheap-o like Hank mentioned: a shot to the back of the head up while against the boards should not be permitted.

A great check by Cooke, no question , totally legal but I wonder if Helm would have been knocked out would they have thrown Cooke out like they did Kronwall when he delivered a perfectly legal hit to Havlat?

How does the league feel about Glamour Shots, then? 'Cause I'd be willing to pay for it if it would get rid of that god-awful photo of Gretzky T&R keeps using. You know, the one that looks like the entire bench just farted in front of him....

June 3, 2009  12:59 PM ET

isn't that type of player? he routinely charges players (timonen, rafalski just last night, etc)

June 3, 2009  01:00 PM ET

and who was it that cross checked Varlamov in the neck? Wasn't that Kunitz too?

Yeah he definitely got him in the ear with the butt end of his stick. It looks accidental though. Kunitz isn't that type of player.

I think stuff has to be called regardless of who the player is or there are 2 sets of rules.

An accidental high stick that cuts somebody gets called.

So you'd like to see the Great One all sexed up like Danica Patrick?

I'll pass thanks.

Unless an elbow has been delivered, how do you penalize a "head-shot"? You know the old-fashioned term for "head-shot"? BODYCHECK. Scott Stevens terrorized forwards for twenty years delivering legal body checks. That is hockey. You cannot hit a guy low, that is much more dangerous. A shoulder to the chin is hockey. Toughen up for the good Lord's sake!

The ONLY answer is modifying the equipment and going back to softer elbow and shoulder pads. This would lessen the impact of the hit and force players to at least consider the force in which to deliver a check. Nowadays, 200+ lb. players hurl themselves into one another with no fear, as kevlar padding makes them impenetrable. Cherry has called for this many times, and he is bang-on. Equipment changes will make guys aware that they have to keep their own safety in mind when hitting instead of becoming human missiles.

All the fuss could be cleared up if equipment was changed to protect the players from each other, instead of making them walking gladiators in body armour.

I'd just like to see players think twice about hitting guys with their heads down directly in the head. I know its tough but if a few guys would lower their shoulders a little bit more to go shoulder to body on some of those their might be less concussions. It is tough though in the heat of the battle, but too many guys have their careers cut short when they lose sight of the puck and lower their heads. It doesn't always mean the guy doing the hitting is dirty, I just would like to see guys think twice about going at a guy's head who has his head down. I like the pens but cooke's hit was similar to Kronwall's just the outcome was different. I cringed when I saw it coming. Helm is some player though!

Or simply add football helmets...and don't laugh. It wouldn't surprise me in the future.

They do need to create a better helmet. But I am not sure it needs to be a football helmet?

June 3, 2009  02:59 PM ET

And the NFL has the same concussion problem the NHL does... don't they?

June 3, 2009  03:05 PM ET

I think it will be near impossible to pass such a rule that is being discussed. There are too many times when players setup for big hits and the opposing player changes his position right before the hit which causes it to be a shot to the head. These types of things need to be looked at on a case by case basis to punish ONLY blatant dirty plays where a blow is delivered to the head. If they pass a simple, no head shots or banned, rule then you won't have enough players to play the game halfway through the season.

Here is a thought. Instead of making new rules how about the officials call the rules already in the rule book. The NHL officiating is the worst of any professional sport. It is inconsistant and in some games biased.

I'm still not sure about last nights calls or lack of calls.

I think uninentionally or otherwise the officials made a huge change in the game.

Out of four officials ZERO could count to 6 when Pittsburg had 6 skaters in the offensive zone? It wasn't a judgement call if they had 6 skaters near the bench. It was 6 skaters in the offensive zone. Soon after Detroit gets a penalty and Pittsburg scores. I submit that Detroit would have have gotten the penalty had Pittsburg been called for the 6 players.

Another questionable call was the interference call in the 3rd that lead to the GW PP goal.

It was interference, BUT the same thing was happening all game long both ways and it was not getting called. If you aren't calling that in the first and second periods, don't call it in the 3rd.

I am not saying Detroit lost the game because of officiating. They did not play well enough to win. Pittsburg played better most of the night. The game might have been a ton different though had the officiating been more consistant.

I don't think either team has been happy with the officiating in this series. There have been some bad no calls and some even worse calls made.
