Do Irish want out of Purdue series?

08:13 AM ET 06.03 | The current contract for the Purdue-Notre Dame football series is set through 2015. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess. Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke said he's in discussions with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick about extending the series past 2015. The Boilermakers and the Fighting Irish have played every season since 1946. Speculation fueled this week when Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez told a Madison, Wis., radio station (WSTO-AM) that Notre Dame officials are trying to revamp its series with Purdue. According to Alvarez, Notre Dame would like to play the Boilermakers every other season. Of course, Alvarez is trying to schedule the Irish with 2012 and 2015 as possible dates.

Shake down the thunder from the sky!

I think ND wants to replace it with a game every year with the Coast Guard Academy to round out their schedule.

June 3, 2009  08:42 AM ET

Just think if every team in college could have contracts with teams they want to play? Every team in college would be in line to have contracts with teams like Temple, New Mexico State and Duke. Notre Dame should man up and drop the independent status. That's why the football program will continue to decline, oh yeah, they should probably lose Charlie Weiss as well, that could help too.

yeah yeah

Agree Toddmm5.....If teams could schedule whoever then they would have a bakers dozen of cupcake games! Notre Dame needs to join the Big 10 or Big East....the Big east already had Notre Dame in basketball so get it going on football....but to be more realistic get Notre Dame in BIG -10 Football...they already play michigan, purdue, michigan state and even Ohio State or Penn state here and there...so just go with it full time..it will boost the Big-10.....! As soon as NBC says PISS OFF NOTRE DAME...to the TV contract then it will happen!

June 3, 2009  09:16 AM ET

Notre Dame needs to push ahead and stop falling back on its heels... Is the Weis regime responsible for this or the current administration... clearly Notre Dame football is not the vaunted program that it once was... this is the critical season for Weis and staff

June 3, 2009  09:16 AM ET

Yeah there's no motive for Alvarez to say this huh. I like the I heard it from somone who heard it from someone approach to journalism.

June 3, 2009  09:25 AM ET

What the hell is wrong with the writer? "Do Irish"??? This would have been much better phrased as "Does ND want out". Or at least put "The Irish".

Am I thinking crazy here, early on humpday?

June 3, 2009  09:43 AM ET

They are obviously scared of the Marve effect.

June 3, 2009  09:49 AM ET

If you are Notre Dame, you stay with Purdue over Wisconsin. Purdue is a rival. Wisconsin is not.

Those Indiana state championships are hard to win.

June 3, 2009  10:19 AM ET

One could say that Purdue is a natural rival for Notre Dame. Both institutions are located in Indiana. Their football teams first played each other in 1896. As the blurb above notes, they've played every year without interuption since 1946. ND's record against the Boilermakers is 52-26-2 (2008). Purdue handed the Irish what is arguably their most ignominious home defeat, 51 - 19 in 1960. The 51 points is a record for an opponent on ND's home field (TDJ, shield your eyes!). Turn it around, and ND has scored the most points (52) of any opponent on Purdue's home field.

If ND is inclined to schedule Purdue less than every year after the current agreement runs its course, one can hope that they schedule Wisconsin or teams of similar calibre.

Hmmmm.... an ND thread with only 15 posts by 10:23 AM EDT. That's just not right. Let's provoke some Domers. REMEMBER 11/3/2007! Yeah, that was Navy, but, Purdue doesn't seem to be raising the hackles here on T&R.

NBC leaving ND? Not happening. Ken Schanzer, the president of NBCSports, has both of his children currently enrolled at ND. Dick Ebersol, the chariman of NBCSports...his son is a graduate of the Irish. When the Irish finally bounce back, and they will, they will be a ratings hog. During Lou Holtz time at ND, no team got higher ratings on Saturdays than ND.

Jabba needs variety in his diet, thus the every other year plan.

Why would ND want to give up MILLIONS in revenues and the ability to schedule virtually anybody they want to have to split what they earn 9 or 10 ways by joining a conference? There are plenty of teams that would line up to play them right now for a crack at being on national TV and a big payday. Say what you want about the current state of their program but their is NO team in America that generates more interest or revenue than them (regardless of their won-loss record). Why do you think Alvarez is fawning all over them? Because college football is about $$$ my naive friends...

Spot on, NBC and ND are like emperor penguins, mates for life. I personally enjoy listening to Pat Haden trying to spin ND's offensive ineptness as a positive.

"Clausen goes down for his fourth sack of the first half, Jimmy is showing his durability and his pocket presence."

Well played, piratey. Cool. Smooth. Accurate. Honestly, you should get regular offers to join kurling teams.
