Warriors eyeing Jennings or Budinger?

What will the Golden State Warriors do with the seventh pick in the 2009 NBA Draft? They have been linked to all sorts of players, including the likes of Brandon Jennings and many of the other point guards, despite the fact Monta Ellis was supposed to be the guy there, which is despite the fact Ellis isn't really a true point guard. Analysts think the Warriors need a big guy, but the analysts also acknowledge Coach Don Nelson doesn't care about big guys and would be perfectly happy playing five guards at a time. The recent firing of Chris Mullin from the executive ranks would also seem to indicate Nelson will get a lot of pull in what he wants. What does that all add up to? It means the Warriors could be picking another guard or swingman, for a team that is chock full of them. There are also players who would love to play for Nelson and in his up-and-down system. One of those players is Arizona's Chase Budinger, a guy who can run and jump all day long as well as shoot the ball from deep pretty well.

Just go trade for Nash and then you will be done w/ all your stupid problem. Nellie is all about PGs and offense. Just as long as his player can chuck it up then he will be fine. GS should have fired this guy already. The team will not get anywhere w/ him. That 2007 upset of the Mavs was a bad thing for GS. It just gave GS confidence on Nellie and made him a god in the bay. After that series win, GS went downhill and will continue to go downhill again unless they get another coach.

Nellie should be fired. Ever since the series upset against the Mavs in 2007, GS has been going downhill. They will continue to go downhill if Nellie is at the helm. All he knows is offense and no defense. He has too much control w/ the organization and his best friend and puppet Larry Riley has been promoted to GM. I'm sorry for the Warriors fans.

It won't be Budinger at 7. No mock draft has him anywhere near the Lottery. Anyway, I like the idea of Brandon Jennings. He might be a year or so away but he has the potential to be very good in the NBA and honestly I don't think it matters who the Warriors pick because they aren't likely for the playoffs next season, anyway.

Sorry Hllywd but that's just how I feel about your Warriors.

I have a strong suspicion Jennings will be a bust.

Budinger has talent but hasn't done anything to prove he will manage to put it all together enough to cut it in the league.

You don't have to be sorry. I feel the same way. The Warriors have tried small ball since the days of Run TMC. It is fun to watch, but the end result will be the same. Nothing is going to happen until someone changes their thinking.

The only way their thinking is going to change is when Nellie either gets fired, or burns himself out and retire. They definitely need a change at head coach.

I think Budinger would be fine in their current system however he would be a major reach in the Lottery so I would take any Warriors interest in him as an indication that they are looking to acquire a pick in the 20's.

Agree-
no way you take CB that high- unless you ARE that high

As for Jennings- at the 7 pick- pretty much all the guys from 5-15
are kind of the same MO- POTENTIAL
I can't fault them for going there - since there isn't really another
significantly better option

Another gaurd doesn't suprise me maybe we'll trade Beidrins to the Lakers for Farmar then we can have 5 point gaurds on the floor at the same time, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I just wonder why this team cannot comprehend that every championship team is loaded at the center and forward position...Lakers Gasol....Magic Howard etc etc! Hey Nellie WHY DO YOU NOT SEE THIS?

Good point. As Hllywd said small ball doesn't win in the NBA. It makes for some fan friendly action but even if you score 140 points a night, if the other team scores 141 because you don't play defense and you don't have a big man to stop them from driving to the hole then what's the point?

There isn't a big man in this draft worth taking after Thabeet (and truth be told I think Thabeet will be a bust) so the Warriors aren't getting size in this draft. They are going to have to trade for that.

A warrior story, let me roll over and yawn....

him being a 'bust' is a tough call-
He's clearly the 'best available' center int he draft
(the OSU kid might be decent)

But if his career #'s are 12pts, 11 boards, 3 blks a game....
would you consider that a 'bust' ?
- I wouldn't cause I'm not expecting any more from him-

Yeah he's going top 3....which in theory you'd want a more
productive offensive player......but his size and potential AS-caliber
defensive abilities cannot be poo pooed

I understand what you are saying but honestly if you get in Thabeet's grill, get him in foul trouble and all that promise people are touting goes out the window.

I saw Pitt do that for years with DeJuan Blair and any coach that studies Thabeet knows what to do against him.

He will go down as a fine college player but mark my words: HE WILL DO NOTHING AS A PRO BUT DISSAPOINT. Michael Olowokandi version 2.0.

can't argue- but do respectfully disagree

HT has gotten significantly better about his fouling & being taken
out of the game- and is still improving.
He's also literally 5 inches bigger than the candyman- who played
against inferior competition at pacific? do they even play D I ball ?

Point about him being worked by Blair is fair- he WAS
but there are only 2 centers in the game that would do that to him
(even as a rookie) shaq & dwight.....I'll take him getting abused 4-6
times a year.

He'll NEVER be a scorer- his hands are awful- granted- but
he si a big dude and is not a skinny Manute type of guy-
he's goign to have a real NBA body in a few years

Downhill? They won 7 more games in 08 than in 07. Nellies best team was in Dallas. Who was the GM? Oh, it was the ultimate Nellie puppet. Jr. Nellie! Thats right its Donnie Nelson. The longtime assistant coach and SON of Nellie! Some would say he is a puppet, or maybe he just has the same vision as the coach. With Nellie as coach, you need a GM who is on the same page.

Cool.

June 4, 2009  12:48 PM ET

Can't win a championship running down the court throwing up 3 pointers and lobs.
Go ask Mike D'Antoni, he had a better squad in Phoenix and hit a wall in the playoffs 4 straight years.

June 4, 2009  12:48 PM ET

i think thabeet could prove to be a ben wallace type. ben wallace in his prime could dominate a game without scoring a point.

yup-
and WINNING teams don't need 5 guys to score 20+ pts
they need guys that play DEFENSE and can compliment
ala Bruce Bowen, Wallace, etc

Actually the Magic is only loaded at the Center spot. Lewis plays more like a SF and can be pushed around by a real PF. The worst thing to happen to Nellie was the Magic making the Finals with only 1 person rebounding(Howard), now he thinks he can probably do the same thing with Beidrins and surround him with shooters and dribblers.
