Former Senators goalie Ray Emery could be closing in on a return to the NHL in the City of Brotherly Love. League sources say the Philadelphia Flyers are close to signing Emery, who spent last year with Atlant Mystischi in the Kontinental Hockey League. Emery has a chance to be the Flyers' No. 1 goalie.

Good luck widdat...

Ugh, I dont want him. He seems more trouble than he's worth. It looks like another bad choice in the never ending saga of finding a real goalie for the Flyers.

It's only a one year deal. Can't hurt. Much better than getting stuck locking in with Biron for a long term which he wants. I'll like this move a lot more if they get Booumeester.

Well, he is a "real goalie" but does have issues which are concerning. Wouldn't be my first choice but if this is who they bring in than I say welcome to Philly. Guy has his issues but he will bring in an edge that should work in their favor.

The merry go round that is the Flyers goaltending continues. At least this time next year we will still have the same story - Flyers looking for #1 goaltender. Ray Emery, hahahahahha.

i think this will turn out to be a great signing.... dont forget that he did his one year in the khl and it proved to him that the gravy train which is the nhl is where he wants to be and will do whatever it takes to stay there. He is one of the most competitive goalies going and very athletic. You can be sure that the flyers have a few "behaviour" clauses in the contract to keep him on the straight and narrow. Good luck Ray

Well this signing could end my 26 years of supporting the boys in Orange and Black. Chicago looks like a good team.
Why Holmer is not seriously persuing Kari Lethonen and potentially locking up a 25 year old stud netminder that could become a top 5 netminder if he was playing goal for a competent franchise unlike his current Thrashers is beyond me.

It is a one year deal, either way not the end of the world. If I were a Philly fan though, I would be a tad fustrated.

Yeah, the one year deal is the only saving grace. More drama in the City of Brotherly Love

i think this might work. i know a lot of flyer fans want j.s giggy but that wont happen, luongo wont happen, and even lehtonen is on a heafty cap hit. biron wants more money and a long term deal, the bulin wall is also a heafty cap hit. they need to sign emery and nitty and start to focus on their defensive aspect of the game. you can have the best goaltender in the league in net, but if your defense is absent then u wont make it far. this seems like the only deal possible for the flyers at the moment. i really dont think this will be as bad as some people are making it.

When you look at what is currently available out there it's hard to get frustrated about it. Your best options are Marty and Emery and we've already seen Marty for the last couple of season which I was fine with but trying a new goalie that is a bit better than Marty and brings an edge may be worth it to try.

Where was the previous drama?

My thoughts exactly!

Philly bringing back the broad street days! Only way for them to have all the guys on the ice drop the gloves at once was if the goalie went after other players too!!

June 4, 2009  09:53 AM ET

its not like hes a crappy goalie, i mean we've settled for less. our top fighter, cote, isnt exactly the biggest, strongest, toughest fighter in the league..... but hes cheap. so wats the problem with the goalie. your getting a good goalie for cheap. maybe philly is where he needs to be.

June 4, 2009  10:03 AM ET

I'd take him. Especially as has been said if Biron is your alternative. Why not take a flyer on him as a Flyer?

Well, there you go then. Good luck until you play the Pens. ;)

One year deal will provide the Flyers a good opportunity to evaluate him an Emery a chance to re-prove himself. Next season's UFA's will be much stronger anyways and this just might be a wise move to preserve cap space and compete through next season. He's worth the risk vs reward. It's not as if there is all that much they can chose from based on their current player commitments and such anyways.

I would have thought for sure they would have done something on draft day. I guess this is a route. Maybe they can get him on the cheap. Can't hurt I guess. As long as they win. Ray doesn't like to play for teams that don't win. Even if he is a large part of the reason.
