Why agents are avoiding Blazers

Even though the Blazers have four open roster spots heading into next season, and five draft picks in this month's NBA draft, prospects -- and their agents -- are avoiding Portland like it's been striken with swine flu. Two issues are deterring agents and their prospects. Most prominently, for the first time in years, the Blazers are not part of the draft lottery. So any prospect projected to be selected anywhere near the the top 14 picks is refusing to work out for the team. But that alone should not prevent every top-tier prospect from visiting Portland. After all, the franchise has a track record of trading up in the draft to acquire the players it covets -- general manager Kevin Pritchard has orchestrated 15 draft-day trades the past three seasons, including a record six in 2006 and five in 2008. Turns out, there's another hurdle Pritchard is encountering: his roster. The Blazers, it seems, possess too much depth for potential first-round draft picks and their representatives.

Oden's tiem may come but now IT is BRANDON's TEAM so it should have been his picture representing the Blazers.

June 6, 2009  08:31 AM ET

Oden's "time"...

June 6, 2009  08:46 AM ET

Exactly...why aren't the Blazers improving their starting lineup instead of adding more and more mediocre bench players. It doesn't make sense.

Yeah but Roy is good with letting the "old" guys on the team get more face time ...

A point guard with experience is what this team needs.
Blake is ok but he isnt a shooting point guard though he can shoot he rarely averages over 15ppg.
Bibby, Nash take your pick Blazers.

June 6, 2009  09:33 AM ET

The inability of the Blazers to get a superstar is their first problem. I don't know why the people up in Portland think they can just draft into greatness every lottery. The Blazers need to give their young lottery picks a break too... they have noone to mentor them. I bet Oden will leave the Blazers and then become a much better player somewhere else. What the Blazers suffer from isn't poor players, its poor leadership in the front office and a lack of patience up at the top.

Oden won't be doing a damn thing if he cannot stay healthy

As far as them getting a 'superstar' ? I mean they've had PLENTY
over the years- and what do you consider Roy ?-
Once Kobe 'steps down' he'll be the best 2 guard i the league
(and he's already top 5)

The only problem I have with that is, a lot of teams have added Miller as a key component only to move him a few years later(clippers, Memphis, Philly etc). I have no idea why they get dissatisfied but it seems they do.

I hear ya-
I wouldn't put him as a top 5 pg in the league-
but he can score, lead a team and play defense

He is a REAL valuable chip on a team that needs a stable
veteran leader - like Portland

Philly did REAL well with him, now it's just a $$ thing

June 6, 2009  11:01 AM ET

This is a young team with plenty upside, but they aren't going anywhere until they give up on the dream that Greg Oden is the next Bill Russell. They've wasted 2 years now. Smart money says it will be at least one more before they wake up.

June 6, 2009  11:08 AM ET

This has so much talent it is unwillling to part with. The problem is that these talents are replacable in the draft. Thts why you have draft picks.

Don't be fooled by Miller's address changes. Most NBA executives are not nearly as smart as they're given credit for. After averaging 16.5 and 10.8, the Cavaliers traded him for Darius Miles. What does that tell you? That was 2002, and the Cavs have been looking for a point guard every since.

lol....it tells me that if the cavs didn't LUCK into LBJ in the
draft they would have likely been in the same position the
sacramento & the Twolves are >>>> LAST, LAST LAST
& a dead franchise

I have a lot of confidence in the Blazers front office because of their recent trades. They finished last season tied for the second best record in the West, but I don't believe a rookie will push them further. They just need some established veterans to become a truly elite team.

Well put. The pg position clearly needs to be addressed. But more importantly, what are they going to do to help them get past any competent team down low.

Pardon me sir; the Blazers finished behind the Lakers, the Nuggets, and the Spurs. I have but 2 words about the Trailblazer's braintrust--Sebastian Telfair. Your confidence is misguided.

They finished the season tied with two other teams West: Denver Portland and SA had the same exact record They were seeded below them, but the fact remains they had the same exact record.

Please don't confuse trades with draft day mistakes, I was very clear on that in my first post. As for Telfair, they traded him along with Ratliff and a second round pick for LaFrentz, Dickau, and Foye. And last time I checked, they traded Foye to get Roy.

current management didnt draft telfair. they bailed out on that waste of space and turned it into roy. your confidence is unwarranted and your facts are misguided. what team do you like in the NBA? or do you prefer to just bash everybodys elses team with your unwarranted confidence and misguided facts?
