Will Rangers keep underachieving Gomez?

When the Rangers gather this week for their organiza tional meetings at Glen Sather's digs in La Quinta, Calif., you can be certain Scott Gomez will be front and center on the agenda. he contract will be secondary in the decision-making process, though it will be a paramount consideration and considerable obstacle should the Rangers attempt to trade Gomez rather than commit to him as a piece of the foundation. No one ever expected Gomez to morph into Sidney Crosby or Vincent Lecavalier simply because he moved into the same high-rent district with the seven-year, $51.5 million contract he signed with the Rangers in 2007. It doesn't work that way in free agency, when the price always inflates expectations and nearly always exceeds value.

A better question would be, "Will Rangers keep underachieving Sather?"

Gomez is a solid player, but he is overpaid and will be difficult to trade in this salary cap era.

gomez made 8 mill last year (more than hossa, datsyuk, and zetterberg) yet only scored 16 goals and 58 points. if anyone's willing to trade for gomez they're out of their minds unless the rangers eat about half of his contract.

Well who exactly did Gomez have to dish the puck to?? Of course his production is down when he doesn't have a goal scorer to get the puck to. Gomez is a center who isn't going to score alot of goals and he won't get assists like he did in NJ if there is no sniper on his line (or team for that matter).

I certainly don't want to act like i'm picking on the Ranger faithful here but am I out of line by suggesting that N.Y seems to be the graveyard for free-agents much like the Detroit Lions are a graveyard for Q.B's?

Gomez?, Drury? these guys are top notch players but it seems as if chemistry is always a problem in N.Y, I dunno, maybe it's just me....but after the strike and salary cap, it seems the more things change in N.Y, the more they stay the same.

Has anybody noticed that all NY teams over pay in everyway thinking is the best way to win a championship yet, no team while doing this method has won a title yet.

Surprising? No.

The Rangers were in my opinion the worst team in the NHL. If it was not for the true Vezina winner Lundqvist they would not have made it as far as they should have. This team is undersized and underskilled.

Gomez started playing well again when Sean Avery came back, because he actually has some balls unlike the rest of the team. Sad but true.

ahemmm.....SEND REDDEN TO THE MINORS!!!!!

June 6, 2009  01:22 PM ET

what are their options? surely you can find a team that will take on the salary, but you`re going to get absolutely nothing of quality in return, so the rangers would have to be sure to pick up a solid free agent. Can be done with naslund`s salary out of the way.

At the same time I could just see it now; he goes to another team, finds his mojo and burns the rangers for years to come (i`m thinking in NJ)...

ok, so you`re basically resolving yourself to buying the guy out. Great, so in a year with the cap going down you`re going to absorb like 5.2-5.5 million a year hit (something like 2/3`s against the cap in a buy-out i think). SO the cap is going down 2 million, plus a 5.2-5.5 million hit = close to 7.5 million minus 1 roster player.

Basically, they would be left with scraps, what will they do, go pick up a 600k defence...do you think that it will be an improvement over Redden? I agree Redden is bad, but he is better than what is available (to the rangers) in the AHL.

we haven`t even gotten into the fact that NEXT year the cap will take a major downward turn, therefore the 5 million a year buy-out is that much more ridiculous, no?

don`t kid yourself, there will be NO takers at that price. Nobody other than sather is dumb enough to have offered that deal.

What have we learned? Last year the teams that played the market got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, look at Redden, Naslund (that thankfully is done), Sundin, Huet, Theodore, Finger... wow, it might have been the worst summer of all time for free agents.

When will the Rangers learn to stop trying to sign all Devil players. None have worked out really well. From Bruce Driver to Johnny Mac to Holik and now Gomez, they even offered Elias more than the Devils. Lou didn't even offer a contract to Gomez, that shows you how important he thought he was to the team. The fact that the Rangers paid this guy superstar money is just funny. Is he good, you bet, is he a 1st line center worth his money, not a chance. But let's be honest, it's probably the best UFA pickup Sather actually has had since he came to the Rags, that's the saddest thing.

No No No....send his sorry azzzz to the minors and continue to pay his bloated salary. Not a buyout...that way the money doesnt affect the cap. The Rangers have lots of money just not lots of cap room.

June 6, 2009  05:28 PM ET

Alot of people knew that contract would come back to bite them on the ass. He is a good player just not worth that kind of cash.

I'd compare the Rangers to the Redskins actually. At least the Lions give themselves a shot at the top picks every year.

With Sather at the helm, I'm expecting the Rangers to hang on to Gomez until they can coax Chris Chelios to sign with a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 years/$45 million.

June 7, 2009  08:00 AM ET

Isn't it a known fact that the more money you pay a player, the better he performs? Or do the agents just want us to believe that?

The what? Sather gives $8 million to another second line center to play with the first unit? Or better yet, he can get an aged former superstar to fill the spot. The Rags need to ship Sather out first!

June 8, 2009  11:25 AM ET

This headline shouldn't ask if the Rangers will keep Gomez. It should ask W.T.F? Gomez! The Rangers cant trade this guy. Who are they going to get to take on that salary? This is why i like the salary cap. Teams like the Rangers are now forced to live with the mistake of driving up the price of a player. You can't use your wealth to cover up your clear lack of judgement on talent anymore.

I dont mind Gomez, but he sure is eating up a large % of the team's cap... so is Drury... Gomez is younger and signed longer... so that might be the better guy to get rid of... eventhough i think he is the better player esp if he gets a winger who can score... Drury isnt a top line center so might need to move Dubinsky there if Gomez gets traded.... something needs to be done though, too much money on guys who don't score poins!
