Barkley utters on-air expletive

During TNT's "Inside the NBA" following the Orlando Magic's series-clinching Game 6 victory in the Eastern Conference finals last Saturday, popular studio analyst Charles Barkley used a word on the air so inappropriate, even Dennis Eckersley would have known better. As studio host Ernie Johnson was signing off for the final time this season - the Finals air exclusively on ESPN and ABC - he was offering plaudits to the program's behind-the-scenes crew. As he concluded praising producer Tim Kiely, Barkley pulled a move popular among mischievous middle schoolers and faked a cough while simultaneously spitting out an expletive. After a moment of did-that-just happen? silence, fellow analyst Reggie Miller asked the question on everyone's mind: "What is wrong with you? Barkley was not publicly reprimanded, though that probably had to do with it being the network's final program until November - out of sight, out of mind, in other words. But there is no doubt he crosses the line of good taste too often, and sometimes needs to remember the envelope is fine right where it is.

There's no way TNT let's him go, his honesty is what makes the show interesting and fun to watch. I much rather watch an entertaining hall of famer like him, than dousche bag Jon barry and the rest of the boring hacks at ESPN. I wish tnt had the rights to the finals, so I didn't have to watch those clowns, and witness them all give kobe and phil a verbal **** before, during, and after the game.

June 6, 2009  10:46 AM ET

The qualities they hired him for, is same qualities which causes him to cross the line sometimes.

Barkley was not publicly reprimanded, well thanks 2 u he now will be

June 6, 2009  11:00 AM ET

shouldn't the headline read: Barkely Has Utters?

Women pay good money for utters like those.

June 6, 2009  11:58 AM ET

Did anyone even hear about this? Why dig this up a week after the incident? Barkley makes the show worth watching, and like someone above pointed out, it was after midnight. The kids should have been in bed.

The funny thing it really seemed like the thinks his producer is a pussy? When Reggie asked him what his problem - he said that he has a short list of people he doesn't like and his producer is on it, or something to that effect.

That is hilarious. What's going on inside Inside the NBA?

June 6, 2009  01:20 PM ET

has he ever taken his foot out of his mouth?

June 6, 2009  01:45 PM ET

We use to pull that coughing /swearing routine in Pinky Daly's history class in the 7th grade. I believe I received an "F" What grade are "you" in Charles?

Just long enough to put the other foot in. Charles loves the controversy and attention that goes with it. He does make the show more interesting.

Must have been a slow news day at the Boston Globe to bring up something like this from a week ago.

June 6, 2009  03:14 PM ET

Still... nothing is better than this:

Exactly! Do they not have anything better to report on? It seems to me like they are certainly missing out on the Finals!

Yeah, that was highly inappropriate but still a pretty funny joke..

Timely.

June 6, 2009  05:23 PM ET

Barkley needs to be put out to pasture. Or better yet brought to the slaughter house.

June 6, 2009  08:35 PM ET

Barkley has no class, and he can never finish his train of thought. In a middle of sentence, he'll start another sentence. This guy wants to be governor. The only place he can be governor is at a desserted island in the middle of the ocean.
