Is Gaborik worth Rangers' risk?

The question is whether Marian Gaborik is a risk worth taking for the Rangers, who historically have swung and missed in free agency more often than Alex Rodriguez in the playoffs. And the answer is . . . well, the answer is a qualified yes, if the Blueshirts could somehow convince Gaborik to accept a one-year, incentive-laden contract for which he qualifies because of the number of days he spent on IR. It isn't ideal, but the Rangers could apply up to approximately $4.25M in bonuses to the 2010-11 cap, if necessary.

Sather: "Not old enough, not slow enough, but he does have the potential to be a big bust in New York. Consider me intrigued!"

Why would Gaborik sign a one year deal with the Rangers when he'll have multiple offers from other teams that are offering a multi year deal?

June 7, 2009  10:12 AM ET

If they sign him, he would want a minimum of $8million he has stated. So if they get him, how much money would be tied up with him, Redden, Gomez, and Drury? They can't afford him, especially with the cap going way south after next year, it may drop $8 million.

Haven't the Rangers learned that buying players hasn't worked out for them, already?

June 7, 2009  11:31 AM ET

There is going to be one team that is stupid enough to sign him to a big contract, and fortunately for the Rangers they don't have the cap space to make that mistake.

they need to get rid of either gomez or redden...if possible...that would be the first piece of the puzzle they cant think about signing someone until they drop one of them..and if not drop drury because i know he has the intangibles but i havnt seen these intangibles since his last year in buffalo....hes been injured a lot and hes makin way more money than intangibles should

how many times do we have to go over why the rangers are stuck with their current contracts, NOBODY wants those players at their price!!!!

he asked 8 million BEFORE spending the entire season in the athletic therapists office, for the nillionth time in his career.

Logic would dictate that he cannot command anything close to 8 million; but this is the nhl...what did we see last year, huet, theodore, finger, naslund, sundin, etc... the only UFA that was anywhere close to deserving his contract this year was Campbell, also Ryder was pretty good even though the contract is about 1.5 million over what anyone else was ready to offer.
SO maybe there is a gm dumb enough to offer 8 million to the only player injured more often than havlat!

Man, the NY media just can't resist taking pot shots at A-Rod hey?

June 7, 2009  02:18 PM ET

I'm sure that the Rangers can find $6M or so a year to spend on someone

with a cap dipping by 2 million next year and potentially up to another 8 million the following year?

June 7, 2009  04:57 PM ET

Gaborik is just 60 days on the DL waiting to happen. And he's a no-show in the playoffs.

June 7, 2009  05:44 PM ET

I believe the NYR or Vancouver sign Gabroik. His Hip IS healed and his loss will set Minnesota back, forget the play-offs for the next couple years Wild Fan.

June 7, 2009  06:46 PM ET

He goes to Vancouver or LAK

I believe you may be right, though naive as I may be, I don't think Sather is that stupid.
Whatever, I LOVE the avatar..Minnesota Fighting Saints!!!
I want to run right upstairs and put on my Cleveland Crusaders jersey

HA HA NYR just sign sign sign who cares what the FA is worth. They don't questions.

June 8, 2009  02:17 AM ET

Wait...there will be another Marion available for next season, as Marion Hossa only had a one year deal with the Red Wings. They won't offer him a long term contract either.

The NY Post is great! They will take a swing at ARODS mother if they have to. They have the best headlines too. The stories are biased as all hell. But the headlines are so great.

June 8, 2009  01:41 PM ET

This would be typical of Sather and the Rangers. This is a bust waiting to happen

June 8, 2009  02:06 PM ET

I could see the Rangers taking him. It would be just the kind of dumb move they like to make. By the way, I think Ryder was worth every cent the Bs paid him. It was worth the entire contract just seeing him shred the canadiens in the playoffs! Granted, I know they stink and almost anyone could have scored against them, but it was still fun, and he finished the regular season with 27 goals. He'll do even better next year.
