10:54 AM ET 06.07 | The emphasis of Tennessee's new coaching staff on recruiting has come with a price tag. UT's 2009 signing class has cost $1,099,513.16 so far, according to records obtained by the News Sentinel. Recruiting expenses are most often associated with coaches' travel and hosting official visitors. With 22 commitments, UT spent almost $50,000 per signee. Under Lane Kiffin's direction, UT spent $835,908.47 from Dec. 1 to National Signing Day on Feb. 4.

Perspective? How does this compare with other BCS conference schools' recruiting expenditures? Sounds like a bunch of money, but it may not be any more than what Kiffin's competitors are spending.

Sounds like status quo to me. I can't imagine the figures at most of the teams from power conferences, are much different.

JRM74, you got it bang on, what does any of this mean if you don`t have other major school`s info to compare this to?
plus even if he is spending more than the competitors, don`t think it means much, he is in a position that he has to build up his program and he has to sell it. It`s not exactl the same as the gators, they can just kinda roll into town and show off their hardware, 'nuff said.

At first, I thought the Knoxville News-Sentinel has a hard on for Kiffin. I was going to say this is poor reporting without contrasting year's costs, until I read the article in that paper:

The truth is that FN is the culprit, by editing out the fact that UT spent more two years ago and spent $1 million+ last year. Also, about 20% of this year's spending was done by Fulmer and his staff. Shame on you FN!

At least at USC the money goes straight to the recruit.
Too soon?

No. Not too soon. Timing was good on that one.

Thanks for saving me the time of doing this myself. There was no way you'd convince me this is any different than any of the other big time programs. Exception maybe USC, Texas, and Florida teams that only need to hock a loogey to find D1 talent.

Not as nice as the Auburn fan with the pic of a girl with AU carefully, thoughtfully, and patiently on her boobies...although both ladies probably lack self esteme and should feel our pity. They sould feel our pity deep. Right in the ear.

Love me some wings. Here we have a Hooters but theres also a place called Twin Peaks (go figure) that has a lumberjack theme. You can get wings but the talent just seems better than the Hooters up the street.

This is probably even a low number for some major NCAA programs. In this time, in this economy, eventually the public will say enough and the entire thing will collapse of its own weight.

I bet if Kiffin were anything other than a white-guy, he would not receive this much negative press. This is a witch-hunt. My hope is Kiffin turns the Vols around in the next 2-3 years and runs it up the rear-end of the FN.

This story is also predicated on the book that many of us read as undergraduates called: "HOW TO LIE WITH STATISTICS."

I don't hink this is unusual at all. I remember reading a blurb a long time ago, but couldn't locate anything in a search now.
$50,000 per athlete is a bit misleading. It is based on the number of recruits signed, not the number visited.
If the average signed athlete visits and is visited by 5 programs (a likely low estiate) it drops th $10,000 per athlete (not counting visits to athlete's homes that do not visit the program).
If you count airfare, lodging, etc. for hosting a recruit and family, and add a handfull of visits by several coaches, $10K doesn't go very far.
