NBA execs question Ray Allen rumors

Despite rumors to the contrary, an NBA executive said there has been "zero" trade discussion regarding Ray Allen, who will be a free agent in 2010, and that such talk is "preposterous." Another NBA executive said, "I'm not really hearing that. But I would expect that kind of rumor. They didn't win without KG [Kevin Garnett], he was hot and cold in the [playoffs], and he's a last-year guy. Upgrade if you can. It would make some type of sense."

the only reason to trade him is to get rid of his huge contract so they can resign rondo davis powe marbury ect.

June 7, 2009  09:02 AM ET

but really just keep him see if you can win next year and then in 2010 have 20 mil to spend on the best fa class in recent memory

June 7, 2009  09:03 AM ET

I wouldn't be surprised if he was moved at the trade deadline. He has a 20mil expiring contract and with teams hurting for cash those expiring contracts may have increased value in terms of the talent you can get back. If teams are willing to take on money past next season there may be some real good deals out there.

Assuming KG is healthy-
I would actually be VERY surprised.

What you & others are talking about is kind of what detroit did
with CB for AI swap.....trying to re-load on the fly.
It isn't a bad business decision- but it would ABSOLUTELY
hurt the team this year- since no one they re-acquire will be an
upgrade over what Ray can give them NOW

Now if KG can't go & they're mediocre come trade deadline-
TOTALLY different senario.......but I doubt they will be

June 7, 2009  10:39 AM ET

I said from the start that there is no way they trade Allen. This is just a rumor some writer put together instead of getting off his butt to find a real story.

June 7, 2009  10:48 AM ET

I don't understand this rumor...the only way the Celtics would make this trade is to get something back of equal value...let's say Josh Howard, Mike Miller and other pieces, or someone else.

June 7, 2009  12:40 PM ET

Me too

June 7, 2009  12:40 PM ET

I think they will not trade him then run his contract until 2010 and see what's the best available option for 2010

June 7, 2009  01:17 PM ET

ray wasn't the problem, they need to look else where

June 7, 2009  01:57 PM ET

Chances are, if KG is healthy next year, they won't trade Ray. They'll instead go for that last chance second ring.

June 7, 2009  02:26 PM ET

If KG is playing like he did in 2008, with allen or a suitable replacement they will atleast make it to the Finals because no doubt they would have beat Orlando this year with KG....

June 7, 2009  03:10 PM ET

Garnett will proable not be the same and he needs another boy wonder to help him just like Jordan did when he was on the Bulls. Possible he may be a injured knee for the rest of he life.

i would like to see josh howard play for the c's he would help tak minutes off Paul pierece, maybe allow pierce to move back to the 2 to create matchup problems , i think trading allen is not a strict NO NO but it would have to be for the right player i'm hoping they manage to acquire chris paul or josh howard, and if the C's are serious about trying to win the championship they absolutely need to get a big man with length to defend, josh smith is out of the question since he stank with the Cav's i like my dyess but i doubt he would be available

Ray Allen gave us a championship but if he has to go so be it !!! "He's in the twilight of a Hall Of Fame Career".

Totally agree with jgb, if the C's are floating his name out there, its just in case KG cant make it back. Ray wasnt the problem last year and he's still a viable option for the 2 guard spot.

Oh, c'mon!......think man, THINK!

If he does get traded, it won't be because he was a 'problem'! A trade would absolutely not be an indictment of Allen's play or attitude.

Trading Allen would be purely a matter of strategy....plain and simple!

Love Sugar Ray and i would hate to see him go but....as a true celtics fan im all about the banners and i dont think with his huge contract they can do it this year...i say move him for a player of equal value or if they have an inside track on a good free agent... hello Lamar Odom?

Even if they did let his contract expire I'm sure they'd be over or bumping the cap once you take into account Garnett and Pierce's contracts.
