Maccabi Tel Aviv's Omri Casspi is expected to play for a European team next year even if he is picked in the first round of the NBA draft, according to sources close to the player. Although the 20-year-old impressed scouts at training camps in the U.S., franchise officials believe another year of seasoning in Europe would benefit him.

Another year of seasoning is ALWAYS good for international
players who try and come into the NBA.....

I'm thinking the NBA might want to consider a seperate draft
for non-colege athletes- say one round-

Not only would another year benifit Casspi, it also can help a lot of teams. They get a prospect to develop without using cap space or a roster spot

I've heard a lot of positive things about Casspi, and I hope he keeps learning and developing overseas...maybe the Spurs trade up to draft him.

Rumor has it they do want Casspi and are willing to buy the pick if he's available

if the spurs want him-
EVERY other team picking near them should forget what their scouts
are saying about any other player and GRAB HIM......
- no one scouts mid>late round talent like SA

Someone should email this thread to Ricky Rubio's handlers.

but really- if you are projected as the #2-4 pick......
how is that the kids fault?
you're telling me that if you KNEW in your heart you weren't
ready for prime time- but some dumb- ass GM takes you at #3
you wouldn't lace 'em up ?

fair point......

I would refer you to Darkos CAREER NBA earnings-
so far - since 2003........THIRTY MILLION
+ another 7.5 mil for THIS season coming up >>>
which by my rough math comes to almost FORTY MILLION $$

I'd say it worked out DAMN well for him

Point well taken. I digress. The X-Factor here is a dumbass GM. I guess Darko isn't a bust afterall.

Who?

June 7, 2009  01:35 PM ET

this would probably be a good option for ALOT of the players coming straight out of the draft. Baseball has AAA, hockey has the AHL, what does basketball have for the kids that aren`t ready? come to practice and then sit in the stands with your suit on?

Would be good for alot of these guys to maybe get to play full games in an important role and also get used to the rigours of pro sports.

well said JGB....so is Orlando tying this up tonight or is this series over????

This is a really dumb post. Nowhere in this article does it say anything about skipping the draft. He may skip the NBA to stay in Europe a year, but he will still get drafted.

June 8, 2009  12:20 AM ET

you can count the european players on one hand that have ever made a difference in the NBA

June 8, 2009  08:11 AM ET

What's the use of putting your name in the draft? He is just wasting others chances of getting drafted.

Only problem would be how does the first pick in the international draft get paid. Is it more than a second round pick same as a first round pick? The NBA would be better served if they added an additional draft round. and not make it separate. They could then pick the wrong person in the third round instead of the second.
