06:39 AM ET 06.08 | Though the Knicks likely will take a combo-type guard in the June 25 NBA Draft, Knicks team president Donnie Walsh will eye a center with his $5 million mid-level exception during free agency, and Orlando's 7-foot backup Marcin Gortat is very high on his list, The Post has learned. The Knicks had no interior defensive presence, and that's Gortat's strength.

he is a very productive rebounder for his court time, but too easily gets in foul trouble.

Is Thomas still "helping" the team out?

And other teams are eyeing at him also.
The Magic may have lost their chance at the ring last night. Once again a very bad officiating game. A superstar gets all the phantom fouls and Hedo gets mugged at the top of the key but no calls.
The Lakers had more balance this time and Odom was the MVP last night.

um....do you have any idea what you're talking about ?
please explain why they WOULDN'T eye a center who they
actually MIGHT have a shot at getting for a mid level?

Exactly. If they can start reeling in quality players for reasonable prices, then by all means do it. Gortat has been steadily been proving his worth. So I think this is pretty much a decision that will likely be helpful to them. I also agree that this is not funny.

The Knicks are obviously looking for a starter if they are using their $5 million mid-level exception. Sorry, but a player with PPG 3.8 RPG 4.5 APG 0.2 stats is not a player you start. If is a decent bench player? YES. But the Knicks are looking for a legit starting center. Gortat is not that. Disagree? Prove me wrong.

Do you watch Hedo when he has the ball?? He uses that forearm to push the defender off every time thats how he gets open shots, Check him out next game..

I don't think gortat will sign with the knicks when he's already playing for a championship caliber team. if he goes anywhere, it will be to a San Antonio, Philadelphia, Utah type. If the jazz lose Okur (and i think they will), maybe they'll sign this guy. I don't think for the money the knicks would offer that he would sign with him.

And he got called for a slight push that Kobe does a lot also. The defender reaches and slaps at his hand and hacks him multiple times and he does not get the call. How many times did he go backwards because the guy hacks him w/ no call? I've been watching the game and they don't get a lot of calls that the Lakers get. I'm just saying that the officials are very inconsistent. Either way the game was really good to watch and was very dramatic. The rest of the Lakers showed up and that was a good thing. The supporting casts needs to continue to play like last night on the road for the Lakers to steal 1 or 2 games.

Gortat makes sense. He's put up good numbers when he's been given playing time. There will probably be a number of teams vying for his services. Smart money says Walsh will lose out by trying to get him on the cheap.

Gortat should be a solid player but don't expect anything too amazing. He really helps Orlando I wonder how hard they will try to keep him. Otherwise everytime Howard got into foul trouble teams would abuse them down low.

You know watching the game last night......
I was really not so impressed either way
- don't get me wrong- the game went to OT......
But the overall quality of both teams really isn't so good
Kobe is obviously the best player & Pau is solid-
and Lamar played well.....but the rest of the team is not
really more than mediocre

fair point-
but first of all there aren't too many quality young centers in the league to begin with (not saying Gortat is)....and the ones that are- aren't available
Plus- the knicks are currently not going to pay ANYONE
other than a 'superstar' big $$ at this stage- since their
eggs are seemingly in the 2010 FA basket
So - what options are there ? Brad Miller? Kayman ?
these type guys are either too old or have too much contract
And in the draft- they can'/won't get Thabeet or Blake-
so who is left ? maybe the OSU kid ?
For the price- as they did with Duhon (who agreed stinks)
they really have no better options- when you take everything
into considerateion
As for Gortats stats....yes they are modest/mediocre- but
he's backing up the best center in the league and doesn't get
the minutes to show what kind of player he is....
So point is-
if they can get him on the cheap/mid-level it is a good investment

I think calling the overall quality of both teams not so fair is a bit much, they both have legit post games and good perimeter guys, with a decent bench, can't ask for much more these days.
I think you are not giving Ariza enough credit. It is the same team as last year and everyone though Bynum would make the difference (although a nominal starting true center does make a nice maraschino cherry, huh jgb? :D). It turns out Ariza is the real difference maker.
Can't say the SA championship teams were much beyond mediocre after their 3-4 best either.
As for the rest of the team, mediocre surely, but when you have four extremely talented players like Pau Lamar Kobe Ariza only the Celtics with KG really match up.

The game wasn't impressive from the star players stand point but the supporting cast for both teams showed up. Odom kinda took over at some point in the second half and he didn't allow the Magic to pull away. Rafer was the dissapointing factor of the game. He had so many open looks but just bricked or airballed his shots. The Magic's freethrow shooting was atrocious again and that made a big difference.

Gortat is a top 3 back up center but not a starter, since the thread doesn't say if he wants Gortat as starting center or a back up I wont say anything else about Donnie and his questionable decision making in NY....

Put down the stat sheet, and watch the game. Gortat averages about 12 minutes a game playing behind Howard. Each time he has been pressed into service, he has responded. On December 15, starting in place of the injured Howard, Gortat played 28 minutes and topped his career highs with 16 points and 13 rebounds. On April 13, again starting in place of the injured Howard, Gortat played almost 43 minutes and topped his career high in rebounding with 18 rebounds and 10 points. On April 30, Gortat made his first playoff start in Game 6 against Philadelphia replacing Howard, who was suspended in game 5. He had 11 points and 15 rebounds. You're wrong. It's as saimple as that, but you asked for it.
