Penguins not worried about Fleury

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was pulled from Saturday night's 5-0 loss in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final after allowing five goals on the 21 shots he faced. It was only the second time in his career that he was lifted from a postseason game. But there was little doubt yesterday from coach Dan Bylsma and veteran winger Bill Guerin that Fleury would put the embarrassment of that performance behind him in time to be prepared for Game 6 tomorrow night at Mellon Arena. "It wasn't his fault the situation we were in," Bylsma said. "But Marc is the guy who is going in for Game 6. We believe in him. I know he's the type of guy who is going to be ready for Game 6. He's going to be focused, and he's going to want to go out there and play his best game of the series. I know that every guy in the room wants to see him in the net for Game 6. They believe in him. They're confident in him, and they know he's going to respond."

Maybe its time they should be. Fleury is two different goalies in Detroit and Pittsburgh. Add to the equation that Pittsburgh scorers can't muster any goal-support for their goalie in Detroit, and home-ice may be the deciding factor in this overall great series.

im trying to figure out where the story is in this article...... did anyone seriously think that the pens were coming back with anyone but fleury.... gotta stick with the guy that got you there.... the pens have played horrible hockey at the lou in det. hard to blame fleury for the team playing terrible.

It's safe to say Ozzie is too but it looks to me like something isn't right with him, last year he stood on his head (especially #5) and this year so far he's looked just a tad better then average, what gives?

ha come on wingsfan...you have a 3-2 series lead and more momentum than you know what to do with. I would kill to be in that position right now :). This really has not been a goaltenders' series, I will say that. The Pens have missed a TON of scoring chances...granted, Osgood has stopped some of those, but there have been times where it was as simple as fanning on a shot!

June 8, 2009  09:45 AM ET

Thanks FN, I was sure they were gonna put Garon and his 12 minutes of playing experience into a must-win game.

June 8, 2009  10:08 AM ET

Wow. Must be slow day to think this is an actual story. Goalie can only be outstanding if he's getting help. If the Pen's would stop taking stupid penalties Fleury wouldn't look so bad. Don't get me wrong- I'm loving every minute of it!

I've always thought Osgood an incredilbly lucky goalie.
He is never going to be confused with patrick Roy. He lets in some real howlers, but he has a few rings, so you can't say much about him. If i was a pens fan, Fleury would drive me batty.

I think Osgood can definitely dial in when he needs to. But, so can the Redwings. Don't get me wrong, Ozzie was the reason we were 2-2 going into game 5, but wouldn't it have been a little ironic if the Wings were able to beat the Pens in back-to-back years using their backup goalie....

I think Detroit was embarrassed bythe way they played in Game 4, as well they should have been. They merely came out the other night and played like they should...and they were more dominating than the 5-0 score would indicate. If Pittsburgh doesn't regain some composure, this series is more than done, though it may be anyway, (hello Mr. Datsyuk, nice to see you again)

Yeah, and I'm sure their coach was going to come out and say "We're playing Fleury, but we have no confidence in him." Good no story here. Sure, the Wings didn't score on Garon, but Fleury is the talent.

That lil Russian makes a bit of a difference, doesn't he?

I think they should put Malkin in goal. Perhaps if he were confind to the crease he might actually stop taking dumb penalties and get some composure.

Eh, sounds good, but he'd probably go chasing someone down and leave the net wide open. :) He seems to have more compsure at home, so we'll see how it goes.

I don't know if any of you guys didn't notice or what, but the Pens were more or less sending a message by taking all of those penalties. They lost 5-0 and could not get anything started, so what else is there to do? I would have done the same thing if I was them. Physical play is the only thing left when you can't get any offense started.

Are you freakin kidding? A message? What kind of message? They acted like a bunch of spoiled twelve year olds.

Do you really think that Detroit is now intimidated because Pittsburgh decided to have a parade to the penalty box for cheaps shots and stupid infractions?

June 8, 2009  12:35 PM ET

If the zebras were kept out of this series it would be over after the 5th game. and they were terrible both ways. I can't believe the Wings didn't send a message after they were up 5 to zip by crosschecking and slashing and hitting people in the gonads. But I guess someone has to be professional and not pull a Lebron James ( Poor sportmanship). Nice show for the proper way to play the game to youngsters. I won, I lost let's get on to the next game. Red Mings don't need to call in the waaaaaaaambulances like some other teams.

June 8, 2009  12:57 PM ET

I do think the Pens SHOULD HAVE been trying to send a message by being physical but I don't really think that's what they were doing. I think they just completely lost their composure and started showing their age a little. I know most people look at them like their an experienced team etc. but the fact is that the core of the team is still mostly around 21 years old. You're not going to send any message by whacking someone in their shin pads. All that's going to do is put you shorthanded while the other team gains momentum by knowing you're frustrated. As many have already pointed out, this has been 2 different series' in Pittsburgh and in Detroit. Hopefully the Pens can win game 6 and have 1 more shot at Detroit in their barn.

Yeah, as horrible as the Pens were in game 5, Ozzie looked like he was very beatable. If the Pens stayed out of the box and got some shots on goal then it "might" have been a different story. Pens just flat out sucked.

I'm sure both Pens and Wings fans think their team would be in better shape if the refs had been better. Neither team can prove it either way because the refs have been pretty bad both ways and it has led to (or prevented) some big goals for both teams. It is what it is. As far as the Wings "sending a message", many Wings fans always think other teams are "classless" when they start taking penalties late in a game that is already decided. Most every team in the league does this and the Wings don't because their entire team is full of talented players that aren't willing to fight and/or mix it up after the whistles. The Wings take pride in their PP being their "enforcer" but without any real human enforcer they should expect some borderline dirty play from the opposition in games such as game 5. That's part of hockey. It always has been and always will be. Do some of you really think that just because the Wings don't have any enforcers that other teams shouldn't be allowed to "send a message" to them.

Pittsburgh won games three and four. Detroit (with a little help from a hospital bed) dominated game five. As far as both the Wizard and the Flower are concerned, I am reminded of Sparky Anderson's comment about who he would play in the World Series. "You dance with who brought you to the prom."

The Wizard and the Flower will both play and acquit themselves well. What else?
