Should professional hockey continue to be played in the desert? According to the NHLPA, not anymore. In an interview with the Hamilton Spectator on Thursday, NHLPA executive-director Paul Kelly discussed what he felt should happen in the debate surrounding the future of the Phoenix Coyotes. "From a players' perspective, it's time to pull the plug," Kelly told The Spectator. While Kelly has stated that he does not necessarily completely support a team in Hamilton, he had no problem Thursday in voicing his belief that NHL owners should question whether the Coyotes should remain in Phoenix.

He can't fire him, only the players can.

ive only heard him comment on a few things since he has taken over, but you gotta love someone who tells it the way he sees it and doesnt sugar coat it..... mind you it doesnt take a genius to realize that hockey in phoenix is and always was a bad idea.

The NHLPA knows what happens when teams lose money....the cap stays down. Thats why owners dont care if the team stays in Phoenix.

June 8, 2009  09:33 AM ET

PLEASE!, allow this franchise to go back to anywhere in Canada!

June 8, 2009  09:43 AM ET

The NHLPA finally got an exec. with some brains... its about time the League does the same.

Bettman's no threat to him. The players have all the power, and as long as he's affiliated with that union, he's good.

Love to. But I believe its the owners who hold the power there my prickly friend.

June 8, 2009  11:50 AM ET

Bring them to KC and let Jerry Reinsdorf take over as owner.

The NHLPA is probably the least powerful of all of the players's unions

Its because meetings are darn near impossible, no two players speak the same language, English, Russian, Czech, Swedish, Canadian, etc.

I had no idea Candian was a different language. :P
Seriously though, when the players think you're doing something stupid, you probably are. Maybe instead of chasing dollar signs about while putting failing teams in the desert, you should listen to your employees. Who, might I point out, are the only reason you exist in the first place.

Get them out of PHX! I'd like to see them in Quebec City or Winnipeg. Anywhere but Arizona.

NO, it's because the sport doesn't make anywhere near as much money as football, basketball or baseball, thus they are less "valuable", so their power is less. The vast majority of players are still Canadian or US- canadian vs english?? Not the same language, eh? You may get an argument aboot that.

Spelling intentional, read it aloud.

Beach volleyball would be way more popular in Edmonton than hockey is in Phoenix.
