The Phoenix suburb of Glendale, desperate not to lose the anchor tenant at the arena it went $200 million in debt to build, suggested Wayne Gretzky, the Coyotes' coach, is overpaid and should have his annual salary slashed by $6 million.

Slashed by $ 6 million??? How much does he make???

June 8, 2009  09:12 AM ET

Can't they get a better picture of The Great One? I mean seriously...

I think 8 but I am not sure.

he probably makes that face half the time hes on the bench.... one half would be the "good shift out there boys, way to keep the pressure".... the other half, if youve watched the coyotes is the " ahhh for fahq sakes, what the hell is he doing!!!" 50-50 chance

Gretz gets paid this much because he puts people in the seats. Could you imagine attendance with a no name coach? Could be tied to his investment also. I dont think its as simple as him getting 8 million to "coach".

June 8, 2009  09:37 AM ET

I didn't know suburbs could talk much less suggest.

June 8, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Is he untouchable there, would he have to fire himself?

Exactly. His salary is based on more than just him coaching the Yotes. They also pay him to be the face of the organization, both in the arena and in the community. That being said, it might be time for Gretz to end his tenure in PHX. Nobody else would have lasted as long as he has with that horrible record.

Good, his coaching skills warrant the cut.

June 8, 2009  10:52 AM ET

Realistically they're probably saving money by having him coach. If he just stuck to being an owner he'd be cashing in just as much and they'd still have to pay a coach. Brilliant move by Glendale, tick-off the guy that brings attention to the team.

June 8, 2009  10:53 AM ET

TGO should now side with Ballsille since the Blackberry guru wants to give him a raise!!!

June 8, 2009  11:04 AM ET

Something tells me that he is not exactly being paid for his "coaching" in Phoenix as much as he is being paid for his public relations to help expand the market. If Phoenix moves and Gtetz is not a part of the ownership I bet you can look for his face in another under developed market.

Looks as if he saw the attendance figures for the 'Yotes

June 8, 2009  11:47 AM ET

Does The Great one not own a portion of the Yotes?

I'm pretty sure he owns a portion of the team (why else would he put himself through the nonsense of coaching THAT team).
Also, that was a funny catch, GGD.

Then again, there are 6 or 8 million or more reasons to do it.

June 8, 2009  12:19 PM ET

I would venture to say that he gets paid the big bucks because his name is Wayne Gretzky.

But that's just me.

June 8, 2009  12:37 PM ET

He makes 8mill a year but also has 10% in stock of the coyotes... so he isnt getting as much as you would think.

What they need is to pick up some good players and turn their team around if he wants to get paid next year lol.
