Navratilova: Silence the shrieking

Martina Navratilova, the most successful figure in tennis history, has demanded a crackdown on grunting by players, describing it as cheating. Navratilova, who won a record 348 singles and doubles crowns in a career capped by seven years at No.1, has created a 10-point plan to help improve tennis. At the top of the list is the removal of the rasping screeching made infamous by Monica Seles, Maria Sharapova and, most recently, Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito. "I see too many issues that are potentially harmful to the future of the game," Navratilova wrote in London's The Times newspaper. "Top of the list is grunting, screeching, shrieking, whatever you want to call it. I call it cheating and it's got to stop. I started having issues with it when I was playing Monica Seles back in the early 1990s. "She was one of the first (grunters), and I didn't like it one bit. "It affected my game because to me it is important to hear the ball hit the racquet. You can hear a bad shot before you can see it and the sound is an imperative part of the game." The issue came to a head during the first week of the French Open when Larcher de Brito argued bitterly with officials over the amount of noise she was making.

Amen! I cannot stand watching Sharapova because of all that unnecessary shrieking. It is absolutely horrendous. Although it affects players more, spectators also listen for the ball hitting the racquet. PLEASE make it stop! And although men do it as well, because they have deeper voices, it is not nearly as annoying.

This is stupid. If they were to make it as a rule then they should have done it long time ago. This is really bull crap. If a player gets distracted by the other player then it's his or her fault for not concentrating. Are they going to erase Seles and the Williams sisters' title because they grunt a lot. What about the men? If a player wears a neon color clothings, will they ban the player because they are distracting the other player? This is crap.

I agree with Martina. If I watch the women play, I have to hit the mute button on the TV.

June 10, 2009  10:22 AM ET

Martina is right ...it is annoying to fans watching tennis, and as a club player I do not hesitate to ask an opponent to stop it if they are that disrespectful when we play. Why did players 20 years ago have the ability to play the game successfully without all of the distracting sound effects, but a self-centered few of today's prima donnas have to literally 'express' themselves every time they hit the ball to be compeitive ?! Why not have golfers start screaming and grunting and groaning next so that they can draw more attention to themselves ? It is nothing more than unnecessary and unsportsmanlike gamesmanship, and should have been stopped a long time ago ! Thank you for calling "a fault, a fault', Martina !

This is just something that we have to deal with. The issue isn't grunting so much as "excessive" grunting. So, who is going to decide what is and what isn't excessive?

June 10, 2009  01:07 PM ET

The grunting is ridiculous and self-indulgent. The worst part about Michelle Larcher de Brito is her arrogant and spolied attitude. Did you hear her response after she was asked to keep it down? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9aJ2LqUzSM.

SPOILED BRAT.

June 10, 2009  01:09 PM ET

And, by the way, if the grunting is ok, then why can"t a player scream "MISS!!!!!!" as their opponent goes to hit the ball? What's the difference? Larcher de Brito is still screaming long after she's hit the ball and it's on her opponent's side of the net.

NOONAN!! NOOOOONAN!!

How many times have you turned on a women's tennis match, heard the shrieking, and thought to yourself, "If I shut my eyes it sounds like a porno movie"? It's unwatchable and I sure wouldn't pay to go watch it. Its obviously done on purpose for some reason or other.

June 10, 2009  04:42 PM ET

If i could kill Lacher de Brito for her screams iwould do it ...

June 10, 2009  04:47 PM ET

So glad the greatest tennis player of all-time brought this up. It's totally gamesmanship and should be eliminated from the game. One bozo posted last week that the screams were analogous to karate screams. Well, genius, I'll buy that the next time a player is trying to serve a ball through a concrete block. Until then, players need to cut it out.

p.e.n.i.s. - is blocked out. That is the scientific word! Are we really that bad of a society that we can't even use the proper terms anymore?

You can just say dick if you want...

June 10, 2009  07:28 PM ET

I agree with Martina here...I've also noticed it in men's tennis...seriously, you're a professional athlete, don't tell me that it's painful to hit a stinkin' ball!

June 10, 2009  07:38 PM ET

If Martina N. isn't an expert qualified to assess the situation, no one is.

In addition, her comment makes sense to me; hiding the sound of the ball off your racket is an unfair advantage.

June 10, 2009  09:10 PM ET

Girlie grunts are best part of tennis. Nobody watch anymore if they muzzle them.

June 10, 2009  10:11 PM ET

I??d kill Lacher de Brito , but at the same time,it is very unusual to set as a rule not grunting... maybe we can give the Judge the possibility to warn the player when he or she is screaming very loud, but prohibit the grunting is not a good solution

June 11, 2009  01:43 AM ET

regardless of the competitive advantage, etc. is the fact that the screamers are unwatchable. I can`t stand Sharapova, I have never watched a complete match of hers because I want to throw my remote into the tv.

Lacher de Brito takes annoying to a whole new level. I would pay to watch a fan jump onto the court and slap her upside the head.

Thank YOU God.. I can't stand this gal's... grunts.. REALLY... I turn off the Volume because of it.
