USC hard-pressed for coach candidates

07:49 AM ET 06.10 | Tim Floyd's sudden resignation as USC's basketball coach will set in motion the rumor mill. It also leaves Athletic Director Mike Garrett with a bit of a problem --almost every competent (and even incompetent) college coach already has a job, and a half-empty Galen Center that sits in the shadow of all that UCLA has done on the basketball court isn't going to pry Mike Krzyzewski away from Duke. What to do, what to do ... Well, the answer might be taking a walk up Figueroa Avenue. Lakers assistants Jim Cleamons and Brian Shaw could have interest, and it would seem a face-saving move by Garrett, especially if the Lakers win the NBA title. Any success achieved with the rubble that was once the Trojan basketball program would look good on a resume.

How about Larry Brown? USC would be one of the few new experiences for him.

Good looking guy, who would thrive in Southern California. Can relate to recruits because he is young. Almost as charismatic as Pete. Reggie Theus, the door is open.

I think Theus would be a good hire.. good call on that 1.. He could be like Capel at OU

Billy G. is unemployed right now and is a good coach, just a little crazy.

This high-paying school has "earned" some serious sanctions, when the slow-moving ncaa gets around to it, the football program will be in more hot water than basketball, they might want to be thinking who will replace the charismatic con man.

Floyd, thanks for turning down the Arizona job

June 10, 2009  10:41 AM ET

Jim Cleamons was a complete flop when coaching the Mavericks. He's always had a rep as a good assistant in the NBA but as HC he was ineffective. How that translates to college I have no idea but......

The other question I have is what sanctions might be imposed and would any coach want to have to deal with that given the potential impact it has to the program. Man would I want some sort of language in my contract in the event something bad happened.

Although it hasn't worked out the way ND wanted with Charlie Weis I think USC needs to try and hire one of their own. There may be some "rocky waters" in the near future with their program so it helps to have someone at the helm that has more than just a passing interest in the future of their basketball program. (Sorry for all the sailing metaphors)!

Oh USC...what happened to that slam-dunk Final Four team you were putting together after your incredible run in the oh-so important Pac-10 Tourney last season? Now you have no coach, no returning talent, and no 2010 recruiting class to speak of....and that's BEFORE the NCAA hands down its ruling.

See you at the Galen Center....you'll know it's us because we'll be the only people in the building.

Oh and just to set the record straight, Floyd never turned down the Arizona job because they never offered it to him.

Next on the agenda....USC Football followed by USC academics

Where does it end?

Now you know why it's the University of Second Choice

I like the Reggie Theus suggestion. He'd fit in there. I also think someone like Brian Shaw (who the article mentioned) would also be a great hire.

I agree, Hova. Makes sense to me, and he'd get plenty of recruits, being that he played at Inglewood High.

Since Mike Garrett has an affinity for cheaters, why not Jim Harrick?

June 10, 2009  01:46 PM ET

Actually, I love the Bobby Knight idea...Could you imagine...bob knight...in LA...how awesome would that be! If you don't live in LA...I don't have time to explain....but think Joe Torre on a surfboard and you'll get an idea.

It's funny watching you hop from post to post, trying your best to put us down. Until things change some in Westwood, keep taking your football beatings, your lack of being able to close the deal in basketball (3 times under Ben), and having to deal with uglier co-eds than we have. Don't even get me started on your football coach either. Until you come up with some new material, do us all a favor, and stop posting.

Who in the world would want to coach for a school who just let its basketball program get scapegoated to divert attention from the corrupt football program? What few players are left now at USC will be gone soon....it has been written they all liked Tim Floyd and will probably drop like flies.

Hire "The Molder of Fine Young Men" Ty Willingham. He can't coach to save his life but since he doesn't know how to recruit you wont need to worry about NCAA issues. Its a no brainer.

It will have to be a no brainer since he coaches football.

I'm nominating you for "Idiot posting of the day". I think you'll win in a landslide. BTW, Ty can coach, he took Stanford, of all schools to the Rose Bowl.

What year did/will you graduate from Texas A&M? Willingham coached in a different sport. He would get confused about only being able to have 5 players on the court at any given time, frustrated that he couldn't have separate defensive and offensive squads, and furious when the refs wouldn't allow tackling.
