06:56 AM ET 06.18 | In just about every playoff series, there was at least one unrestricted free-agent-to-be whose play might result in a fatter-than-expected payday this summer. The Detroit Pistons, one of the few teams with money this offseason, are expected to be in the running for most of them. One player who will get a lot more attention based on his play in the postseason is Los Angeles Lakers forward Trevor Ariza.

The Pistons may be the only team ever to be in the position they are in, money to spend while just about everyone else either has no cap space or wont spend. Lot of pressure, lot of choices and they need to offer their money wisely.

They need to think about how the pieces fit together. A.I. was a good example of the peices not working. If they don't play their cards correctly they could be set back for years.

Lakers have to win the bidding war with Detroit for Ariza at all cost... if it means letting Odom walk so be it. Ariza's game is too valuable to pass up on.

June 18, 2009  07:18 AM ET

why would detroit want ariza? tayshaun and ariza are similar players. the more important question is why would ariza leave la to play for the pistons?...la will pay him and he has a better chance of winning more rings

Yup, but atleast Iverson had an expring contract and isn't still with the club...they probably have nobody right now that you could build around, all those Eastern Conference Finals appearances are stored in history - it's going to take great moves to get back there, if they get back there next season they shud change their name to the Detriot Magic lolz. I think it will be a shock to some of the fans if they dont make the playoffs, which could well happen if they don't make a better team/Two seasons ago they were in the eastern conference finals.

in terms of contributions to getting that Championship...LO and Ariza were just as important. Without any of them or both....Lakers would have a lot of holes and a lot more Flaws would be shown..........i seriously doubt the Lakers won't have Ariza and LO next season, that being said it just takes one over-zealous GM to dump truck loads of money and go over the top....so i guess nothing is certain..........

Whatever the price, Lakers need to keep this kid.

June 18, 2009  07:55 AM ET

I don't see it happening unless Pistons already have a slapped a new destination on Tay. But love the way this kid plays D, and seems to be interested in developing his offensive game.

I am ready to see a new Pistons. I'd be ok if the Stones start over. In my opinion there is probably only one untouchable, but I don't know how closely I would hang on to Stuckey. he is a combo guard, which means he is most effective off the bench.

June 18, 2009  07:58 AM ET

nobody on the pistons should be untouchable....the only untouchable player they should have had was traded away this past season

No, they don't. Some other team is going to give his $$$. Giving Ariza money detracts to his game. The reason he was such a surprise these playoffs was that he was a low-salary role player who played bigger than his salary. He willl lose his specialness when someone gives him a big multiyear contract because he will no longer be a surprise and he will be expected to make giant plays like he did in the playoffs, which he can't do on a nightly basis. He's not a star or anything close to it.

Ariza will get a big contract this year. Whoever puts up the highest bid for him then he will play for that team. This is his big chance to make the big bucks. The Lakers might lose both Odom and Ariza but they might get Artest in return.

This makes no sense... I agree with ya... Both because of Prince and the LA situation

June 18, 2009  08:23 AM ET

Ariza & Odom, both will have plenty of offers ... can you imagine them with:

Ariza: OKL - CLE - UTAH - DEN - DAL - NY - CHA - TOR - IND - NO
Odom: NJ - MEM - SA - DET - CLE - WAS - CHA - NY - HOU - GS

Therefor, it would really, really, really cost them (LA) to retain them both. Then again, they just dump a few millions on the Radmanovic and Minh deals and with a ring as an ACE, this hand belongs to them.

Unless they get him with a trade, is highly unlikely since LA would be over the cap anyways and that is without both.

June 18, 2009  08:27 AM ET

If the Lakers let Odom and Ariza go, their hopes for another championship are history! Even if one of those guys leaves, the team balance will have been weakened significantly. And oh by the way, Binum needs SERIOUS improvement. His play during the playoffs clearly shows why teams in the NBA should be very careful about taking players directly out of high school. Kobe Bryant is a rarity and comes once in a lifetime.

lose his "specialness"...Aria is younger than 25...he plays hard D, hustles and plays with lots of energy, his greatest opportunity to show his abilities was these past playoffs where his team won the championship and he was an important part. He did not fluke his 3's, most of them were created from the ball being kicked out or swung around the perimeter much like how the triangle works...he is valuable as he has shown he wants to improve and has improved.

What the crap do you know... in this league it comes down to two kinds of players... one with specialness, and one without specialness.

This kid is far too young to risk losing his specialness.

Sorry if that was a bit harsh. Its just that I had specialness for one day once, and never realized how much it meant until it was gone...
