An NBA executive told the Boston Globe that the Minnesota Timberwolves is working a deal with the Phoenix Suns that would send former Celtics forward Al Jefferson and their sixth pick in next week's NBA Draft for All-Star Amare Stoudemire. The Suns, which have dangled Stoudemire for some time, found a suitor in Minnesota that is in transition. The team announced today that coach Kevin McHale has ended his 15-year association with the team. New basketball of operations David Kahn is looking to take the franchise into another direction.

read it on Twitter, it must be true. "the only thing the media can quote correctly is absolute silence".......Bobby Knight

if i'm minnesota i wouldn't trade jefferson for amare. jefferson is a double-double guy and he plays defense. amare is great offensively but his defense and rebounding aren't very good

Oh my God this is the stupidest move I've seen proposed yet. Why would the the T-Wolves want an older version of Jefferson who only scores and sometimes defends? This makes no sense. They're not planning on winning anytime soon, so they must think that Jefferson has hit his celing.

If you consider that both teams want to change directions, this is a way to do it.

- PHO gets: an excellent replacement for Amare & the 6 pick as well. The only detraction I see is that Al has no mid or exterior shot, being an excellent post player he and Shaq would clog the box. Therefor, both wont be as effective (see Randolph & Curry version in NY). Also he is not as athletic as Amare and while he is a double digit rebounder, he is on the same Amare mold on respect of defense or the lack of.

- MIN gets: an excellent scorer, a superior athletic player and a media & merchandise "fan fest". The only detraction I see is that Amare is more of a jumshooter/dunker than a post player, that happens to be the same type of game of Love (the last has more range), wich happens to leave MIN with no post presence. He is as bad defensively as Al (even more) and he would be a big gamble since he can opt out in 2010.

This is the best scenario so far for the Suns. At least they are getting somebody in return. The Suns get Al Jef for Amare but there would be another problem. If this happens then the Suns are going in a different direction. They are going to the Porter style of playing which is to slow down the game. The Suns will also have 2 low post players in Shaq and Al. That's probably too many low post players that are pretty slow on transition. Amare is still young and he can be the face of Minn. If this trade pulls through then Shaq might still get traded.

Yea... Curry and Randolph sure tore it up in NY... Terrible trade for Minn... but what else is new... Trade a soon to be all-star and a big draft pick for an all-star

Very interesting- would've be a fair swap last year
BUT.....is big Al's knee healthy> ??
there is NO WAY I trade for him at this time.....
Bigs + knee injuries = TROUBLE

I would HIGHLY doubt they'd keep both-

you mean like the same knee problems amare had? or the fact that last season he missed a lot of games with a detached retina? it's risky both ways but i'd rather have Al. he's 2 years younger than Amare and a much better post player...offensively and defensively

From the Suns perspective I don't mind this trade at all. One thing that has always bugged me about Amar'e is that fact that he doesn't get you at least 10 boards a game.

Of all the proposals for Amare, Al Jefferson is the best player I have heard mentioned. The problem is that I think it's 80 percent unlikely that the T-Wolves would deal Jefferson.

This is one of those, I'll believe it when I see it type of deals, because I just don't think it's going to happen.

June 18, 2009  09:03 AM ET

I have been saying all along the Suns have to blow it up and start from scratch. This is a good trade for them. They have to find takers for Shaq, Nash and Grant Hill to stockpile draft picks.

It's sad seeing Steve Kerr tear assunder what Mike D'Antoni built. I hope this serves as a timely warning to all owners. Hire GM's wisely! One bad GM and y're in for a decade long drought... Imagine if this happened in NY.. .where after multiple 60 win seasons a GM comes in to shred the whole thing apart like a bulldog eating mayo...

Bye bye bye to entertaining basketball!

New basketball of operations David Kahn is looking to take the franchise into another direction.

Here we see how bad teams seem to get worse instead of better. Seems to me the 'direction' he's talking about is down. What could he possibly be thinking in dealing Jefferson and the 6th pick? This team is missing McHale already, and he isn't even gone yet.

Are you kidding me? The only thing 'Antoni (the 'D' is silent) built in Phoenix was a string of disappointing losses. Keep trying to fix the Knicks. You're as bad as Kerr.

June 18, 2009  09:27 AM ET

Minnesota are stupid. Dont they know that al jefferson is a star player now? He signed a huge contract with timberwolves didnt he? He's their future.

June 18, 2009  09:41 AM ET

its actually good for pheonix, the get a legit low post scorer who will command dbl teams, they get rid of amare who wants out. and no they can send shaq off to cleveland or dallas. plus they get the 6th pick. if im pheonix, i take the trade without hesitation. many options for them at #6

June 18, 2009  09:44 AM ET

I think Kerr may have this team going in the right direction. Now that he can unload some of the players he inherited, he can work on his plan (if he has one).

It's time for Phoenix to blow some of this team up and start over...

YES-
big Al is a bigger dude though-
he ain't the freak athlete Amare is- which means he's
going to be slowed down even more.....
- Amare has lost some of his explosiveness-

you also got to remember that we're not just talking about NOW
when they are in their mid 20s....we're talking about as they
get OLDER- towards 30 and they can barely move...

also he JUST had the injury-
how in the world can you be taking THAT MUCH risk
on a guy that's not even rehabbing seriously yet

Minnesota is another team that just can't figure it out. They just keep trading, moving players and drafting mediocrity...
