Plaxico trying to force Goodell's hand

07:46 AM ET 06.18 | The commissioner knows Plaxico Burress is playing the delay game, which forces him to act before a conviction. From my perspective, the commissioner has no problem being proactive, is not afraid of conflict and is not afraid to make tough choices. However, he knows that whatever ruling he makes, a challenge in court by Burress' defense team will soon follow. Therefore, his decision must be three-dimensional. The first dimension handles the ruling, the second has precedent to back up the ruling and the third can hold up within the boundaries of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement.

That will happen!

June 18, 2009  08:02 AM ET

It's unfortunate that he has to jump through so many hoops just to suspend a thug who did something incredibly stupid.

June 18, 2009  08:16 AM ET

You can't make this stuff up. HAHAHAHA!!!

June 18, 2009  08:19 AM ET

Come on Commish! Do the right thing and what is in the best interest of football. The heck with that "incredible stupid thug." He's just another extremely poor role model who brings discredit upon all the worthy players in the NFL who don't act out in the real world.

"Justice delayed is justice denied." Yeah, once again the legal system and its endless delays is screwing up the honest people.

Or is it? Suppose Jolly Roger just says, "The man is innocent until proven guilty. The NFL will take no action until the judicial process has completed." In theory, that would let a team sign Plax and he could play. But, what team is going to touch him with a poison pill like that hanging over his head? Would the court allow more delays? If Goodell stays mum, nobody is going to put up money for a guy that could get a couple of seasons as a guest of the State of New York, followed by some as-yet-unspecified discipline from the Commish.

goodell will make the right decision

June 18, 2009  08:52 AM ET

how dumb is Plax really? Does he think this will get him leanancy?

June 18, 2009  08:54 AM ET

I long for the days when an athlete was more concerned about the abilities of his agent more than he was the abilities of his lawyer(s).

Hey, maybe we can still work this out - Plax gets to play, and there's no suspension from the League. In return, Drew Rosenturd does 3 1/2 years in Plax's place.

June 18, 2009  09:20 AM ET

well he didn't kill anyone so he should get less than 30 days right?

Manslaughter= 30 days
Dog fighting= 19 months
MAkes sense to me

No, Plax is hoping for leniency.

Yeah, but he used a GUN when he didn't kill anyone. What's more, he shot a rich guy. Anyone knows you can't be black and shoot a rich person in NY and get away with it.

June 18, 2009  09:56 AM ET

I'm waiting to see what Goodell hands down to Stalworth. How do you suspend a guy for a year when the courts only give him 30 days? I know it's manslaughter, but wow! The NFLPA will be all over that one.

June 18, 2009  09:57 AM ET

Why are most of you wanting the commish to come down hard on Plax? The only thing the idiot did was shot himslef in the leg. He didn't kill a person, becasue he was driving drunk. nor did he run a dog fighting ring. The only victim in the whole Plax mess is Plax. I say wait until his court case has been decided and then let the commish make his ruling. That's the fair thing to do in this case.

I agree with the fact that all he did was harm himself. i think the punishment he eventually recieves will not fit the crime... however, the giants are taking the worst of this whole thing. First they have to release him because thier star reciever was almost definitly doing up to 3 years of prison time, then they have to play a player that didnt play for them last year and now he gets to go elswhere make more money and play without any compensation for the Giants!!! Maybe this is just from a Giants fan but I think they got royally screwed. And now the commisionaer has his hands tied. The only person making good on this is the idiot that shot himself who walks away making millions (dollars and life mistakes),

On the other hand of my comment about plax i stallworth... who while killed somone... actually showed remorse, is paying a settlement (which one could argue is equal to jail time. its not the laws fault that the family wwants the money over jail time) and the biggest difference about the stallworth situation as opposed to Burress, Tank Johnson, lance briggs (car accident and fleeing the scene) and Pacman and of course Vivk is this... Stallworth has not once talked about returning to football. His concern has been his legal issues and personal life. They other before mentioned people made a mistake, showed no remorse and the only thing they wanted was to be told when the could return to football. I say 1-2 game suspension max for him because of how he conducted himself in the situation.

June 18, 2009  11:08 AM ET

Wants to force Goodell's hand? To what? Plax already shot himself once does he want another round?

June 18, 2009  11:40 AM ET

I just want to see how he [plax] responds after the New York court system gets done with him. I think Goodell's decision is the least of his worries.

damn I'm trying to figure out why I fought in the Gulf back in the 90s. I thought this was a free country & you get a trail before they throw u in the slam. But it seems the Commish has decided to not follow the rule of law in the US .. oh duh I forgot this is not a free country unless u look a certain way my bad.

What goodell does has nothing to do with the law... he is the CEO of a company. I NY someone can be terminated from thier position without cause. The giants let him go the same way nike would pull the sponsorship of an athlete if they did something wrong. Michael Phelps lost endorsements without ever having a charge brought against him... did those companies act unjustly? Goodell has an issue right now because his precendent has been to wait until after a trial to hand down a punishment. But he is in every bit of his rights to suspend any NFL employee for actions that are detrimental to the NFL. Plaxico will have his day in court... your service was not in vain!!!
