Will Pedro return as a closer?

09:02 AM ET 06.21 | Pedro Martinez has drawn interest from the Cubs and Rays, and Foxsports.com also reported that the Yankees and Angels have been watching workouts. The fascinating possibility is that he could return as a closer. Would his arm be resilient enough? If he's throwing 94 miles per hour, as our sources tell us, and given his ability to pitch and his competitive fire, he could be an interesting option for any of those teams out of the pen.

pedro is only good for a few innings so closer would be a good option for him!

It is amazing this guy doesn't have a job considering who is actually on some MLB staffs.

I think it is a good move if pedro is interested. Something tells me that he is wouldn't be interested in returning as a closer or even a set up guy. He wants to start. But no one wants him to.

id love to see him closing, that could solidify his position in the majors for up to 4-5 more years and assuring his position in the HOF even more

pedro is my favorite pitcher I wish the sox would sign him but i know that wouldnt happen

June 21, 2009  01:21 PM ET

A closer with an 86 MPH fastball? Nope..

June 21, 2009  01:23 PM ET

I know it says 94 MPH, but he wasn't hitting that on a consistane basis..

Where is the mention of the Mets in this discussion. 2 starters on the DL and a bullpen that has been terrible outside of K-Rod. Come on Omar he's Latin, isn't that all it takes to be a Met now?

The HOF is already assured, I think closing is a smart move if he can stay resilient.

Is there really a need for another five inning starter?

June 21, 2009  09:49 PM ET

Pedro is washed up as a starter and also most likely as a reliever given his inability to consistently toss the ball over 90 MPH. Whoever is willing to spend bucks on a reclamation project that will probably result in a continuation of time on the injury list shoudl have their head examined. His role as a premier major league pitcher ended with his stint with the Red Sox who were smart enough not to accede to his ridiculous salary demands as his skills were diminishing. He cooked his own goose with his greed.

Interesting Proposition. He has nothing to lose, he's already a hall of famer. May be the only option left if he wants to continue his career.

I agree that Pedro is a HOFer. He should be realistic about his legacy and his chances at success were he to make a comeback. If he can be a really good reliever, then by all means do it. But I think we can all agree that his career as a starter is over.
