Will players OK drug test policy?

There was more discussion about the NHL's drug testing policy Saturday, the second day of meetings by the league's players association, but there were no developments. Parties from both sides continued to insist there isn't a problem with performance-enhancing drugs in hockey, and they said they remain open to stricter standards in the policy, but just how far the players association is willing to go remains in question. The NHL's policy includes random testing during the season. Teams can be tested one, two or three times. Kelly said during the Stanley Cup Finals that the players would discuss the stricter suggestions and vote on whether they would be willing to accept the tougher standards. There was no vote, but Kelly said he would like to see any alterations to the testing policy negotiated before the end of the collective bargaining agreement, which has two seasons remaining, plus an optional year. Some of the concerns from the players union include how privacy would be affected with offseason testing and the NHL's lack of involvement with the American Hockey League on the issue.

Can someone buy this guy a neck.( see picture above)

This league needs all the drugs it can get its hands on. The management is obviously on drugs. The talent pool is grossly thin, and the geriatric third needs em just to keep goin'. And the fans need to be on them, not to notice that the drugs are the only thing that they still buy, that's more expensive than their hockey tickets. This just ain't gonna happen. Dump Beatnun - keep the drugs.

What in the hell are you talking about?

June 22, 2009  09:22 AM ET

considering that the league and union have stated for years that hockey is the cleanest professional sport i think that have painted themselves into a corner and have no choice but to improve the drug testing policies and testing amounts, if they turn it down it will turn alot of heads and garner alot of bad press.... if you say you have the cleanest game.... its time to prove it.

lol consider it done. On your other point, I completely agree. I want to be able to prove that our sport IS the cleanest one out there. Obviously it's risk/reward, because it would be a lot more difficult for the NHL to overcome a major steroid scandal. I definitely don't think that would be a concern, though.

June 22, 2009  09:45 AM ET

it would depend on the player who gets nailed shaf.... a fighter/goon type player and i think people would just move past it really not being surprised that a fighter is on roids.... now if a superstar like say lecavalier or something gets nailed..... **** will hit the fan.....

but i think it will be worse if they dont get tougher on PED, every headline will be "what are you trying to hide"

June 22, 2009  10:05 AM ET

For anyone to say that there are limited PED'S in pro hockey is nuts. we live in a day and age where millions of dollars are on the line with the contracts. All athletes look for the edge in some way shape or form. it's not the old days of juicing the horse steroids and stuff that makes you look huge, it's the stuff that helps your body recover quickly from injury and adds lean muscle mass and strength that all athletes are looking for. in my era it was Sudafeds, Ripped Fuel, cross tops and coffee. then it was a bottle of Nyquil on the bus to go to sleep on our way to the next city. there has already been some scuttlebut around about players on Washington involved in some stuff, it won't be long until something breaks and the NHL will officially have a problem like all the other sports. Remember all dealers of this stuff are pretty shady characters that will throw anyone under the bus they can if they get caught.

Agreed. As someone else commented, NHL seems to take pride on the fact that it is very clean where drugs are concerned. If you are going to make that claim and repeatedly, you better be able to back it up.

"Read my lips, I didn't take any steroids"!!! Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, "Manny Being Manny", Sosa, etc.-----. Every sport has a problem with steroids -even hockey !!!

You just named baseball players. And hockey players aren't buff. They have tested for everything during the regular season, and only one person has ever tested positive for anything.

June 22, 2009  10:56 AM ET

If the players are clean and the drug testing goes through, Hockey will shine bright again

June 22, 2009  11:21 AM ET

I think they should be testing the owners and Lord Vapor before the players. Some of the stuff that comes down from "on high" seems just that

Agreed. When Patrick Kane shows up next season hovering around 250 lbs that's when the NHL should start testing.

You guys must get awful tired carrying around that bucket of sand you keep your heads stuck in.
OUR sport????
There's a heck of a golf tournament goin on - Go D-squared!

I think they could test every player in the NHL and not come up with one positive test. Hockey is known for its honesty, and these players are not cheaters.

...and the Ayatollah is one heck of a nice guy, you just got to get to know him. What I'm talking about isn't cheating - it's reality.
