Texas behind McCoy's Heisman campaign

07:25 AM ET 06.22 | Coming soon to a television, radio or webcastnear you: Colt McCoy. This whirlwind surrounding McCoy gusts in various directions but has three distinct aims: 1. Garner the national exposure needed to help McCoy in a Heisman Trophy race that's sure to be between him, Florida's Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. Since Tebow (2007) and Bradford (2008) already have Heismans, the more we see of Colt, the better. Plus, keeping the face of the program on a national stage gives Brown a built-in recruiting weapon. 2. Give McCoy a chance to develop his public speaking skills, given that he's the unquestioned leader of a team expected to contend for a national title. College football voters watch television in the off-season as well. It can't hurt. 3. Allow McCoy to include his own interests in this blitz, making for a well-rounded off-season for a Longhorn who has a great chance to play pro football. Longtime Texas spokesman John Bianco said he went through a similar preseason media push with Ricky Williams a decade ago, but not to this level because Williams was still playing minor-league baseball at the time.

Good for Colt. He's a great guy, and may well be deserving of the award. But let's not lose track of the fact that it's a team sport, and winning 14 games as a team is a lot more important than any individual awards garnered along the way.

it's already started with McCoy on Ivan Miesel's ESPN podcast a few weeks ago...but everyone knows that Jimmuh Clausen is going to win it this year.

This seems like bad juju to start a Heisman campaign before the season even starts, but what do I know

June 22, 2009  08:48 AM ET

The only difference between McCoy and others in the past is that Texas has announced what they plan to do 2 months before training camp.

June 22, 2009  08:52 AM ET

Good God. Now we are going to be subject to the Heisman Rankings from Week 1 again. It would be nice to wait until week 4 or 5 to hear all that crap. That being said, McCoy should definitely be near the top of the heap.

Exactly. The Vols did that with Peyton and Oregon with Harrington. Neither won the trophy. If you put them on the pedestal this early in the season, you just create a target. People like voting for the underdog, not the leader of the pack.

The best player usually never win the Heisman anyway... But he will be close to the top at the start of the year... I think he was better than Bradford last year.. Think Bradford had more help...

But anyways.... GEAUX TIGERS.. CWS in 2!!

Colt McCoy is winning the heisman this year and Texas is winning the National Championship

Just setting him up for disappointment. Mack is just trying to get publicity in case he needs to bit** and moan again at the end of the season. He has to complain about something. Oh yeah, he also might be trying to prove critics wrong saying he can win without Vince Young. Roscoe P Coltrain could lose to OSU or even Baylor (yes, they are getting pretty good).

If you believe pre-season rankings, we should win our 1st 13 games. But yeah, OU and Okie State are also top 10 teams, Tech and Kansas are also ranked. And you are correct that Baylor is much improved, and anyone who takes them lightly could be in for a nasty surprise. Will we win the NC, or even the Big XII? Maybe, maybe not. But I like our chances at least as well as anyone else's. And dude, where did you find that avatar? It's ****ing uglier than the nasty bare foot hhh was using for a while.

More immediately, we need to beat LSU in the CWS tonight.

Yo, LSU! Speaking of avatars, do you have one with determinative evidence as to whether the young lady on the far left is a natural blonde?

June 22, 2009  10:26 AM ET

Ah, JRM is first to post to this thread... All is right with the world this morning.
