Devils upset with Sutter?

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello is a busy man these days. Perhaps even an angry man. With the NHL entry draft beginning on Friday evening in Montreal and his search for a new head coach still apparently ongoing, Lamoriello is avoiding any comments about Brent Sutter's expected defection to the Calgary Flames. he word in Calgary is that the Flames have a tentative 10 a.m. press conference set for Tuesday. That is expected to be the announcement that Sutter is Calgary's head coach just weeks after leaving the Devils with one season remaining on his contract. Lamoriello is likely to let Sutter go, but it is unclear whether the burned GM attempted to get compensation by initially withholding permission for Flames GM Darryl Sutter to officially offer his brother the job.

Oompa loompa doompity doo whatever in the world will grumpy Lou do?

June 23, 2009  09:28 AM ET

Don't mess with Lou.

I am sure the press conference will be great to watch. Brent in his monotone voice not directly answering any questions. It will be the same mood a year later when his brother gets fired.

a blind man could have seen this coming. a) Calgary fires Keenan. b) Sutter resigns from the Devils. c) his brother is the GM of the Flames. d) Calgary is about an hour from his ranch. e) the whole hockey world put 2 and 2 together on this one. f) HOLY CRAP SUTTER WENT TO THE FLAMES!!!!

Lou is a proud man and will get some type of compensation for this in draft picks or money.

Lou should be PO'd. No way there wasn't some form of tampering.

Brent Sutter has lost some honour here in my opinion.

If Sutter is still under contract, than won't the devils get compensation of some sort. If he signs with the Flames before they come to terms with the devils is that not tampering?

They don't get compensation at all. Lou can let Sutter go or keep him out of the league for one more year.

June 23, 2009  12:21 PM ET

Lou's just mad because he didn't get to fire him a month before the playoffs.

How can anyone really have sympathy for Lou?

The guy is as likeable as a tactile porcupine.

lol wow

June 23, 2009  03:08 PM ET

Lou has the choice of letting Sutter go free and clear or getting compensation or not letting Sutter go. Just remember how the Devils got Scott Stevens.

June 23, 2009  04:09 PM ET

i dont think Lou cares for coaches lol

June 23, 2009  04:14 PM ET

I kind of like Lou. He's even crustier and more curmudgeonly than I am.

You can't PROVE that their was any tampering. So what if they are Brothers? MAYBE they never speak to one another. And just MAYBE they hate each other. And just MAYBE Sutter got tired of N.J. And just MAYBE the other Sutter was told to hire him.
See what I mean Hank?
I've been involved in the Family court system now for over 3 years representing myself. I have been rather successful having caught the other side in flat out lies on several occasions. I have become rather educated on the ins and outs of the court "system" (man do I hate Lawyers but I find myself becoming one!).

Sutter was nothing special. Most of our coaches have been successful here - doesn't say a whole lot about any of them. That's why you can dump your coach with less than 20 games to go in the season and win the Cup in 2000. That's why LeMaire added the trap and a new defensive scheme DURING the Cup Finals against Detroit and the Devils won the Cup in 1995. A good team does most of the work - not the coaching staff. And with our system - the coach is even less important. That's why Lou could easily step in for the playoffs why Julien got canned. Sutter was a crybaby and a liar. A stray puck and a few teeth lost next season should suffice. Go Devils - Screw the Sutters (make a good license plate too).

If it walks like a duck..... etc.

Come on, get real. The court system is not a test of reality.

June 23, 2009  09:45 PM ET

NO ONE wants to work for Lou. I think its a joke how everyone praises the guy. His job is to manage the team and manage the coach. Well he is poor at picking them and managing his hires. He then seems to want control but not the accountability to go along with it.

Believe me Hank, I know what you are saying. I just wanted to play devils advocate.

June 24, 2009  08:30 PM ET

Why Worry about it...New Jersey will be fine...there is a system in place that Sutter brought and shared with Maclean and the other competent coaches that will fill in..

Sutter was 3000 miles away from his family...and realized it was more important to be close to home...no brainer...even an amazing tough guy in LOU knows what is important...this is the same guy who fires a coach a week before playoffs begin...come on fans...think about it...

June 25, 2009  06:40 AM ET

Hey he had a coach. A damn good one. But he fired him and now hes coaching the Bruins. OH WAIT! Same coach that made the Bruins finish first in East this year and had the Devils second by the time he was fired?!
Man oh man, is this karma or what?
Hope he finds nobody and he gotta coach all year long!

June 25, 2009  07:44 AM ET

The Sutters took a hit in their credibility - big deal! The Devils will recover. They can find another coach who can get them to the playoffs and lose in the first round two consecutive years. I want a coach who can get them past that point - thank you.
