Who will Penguins re-sign?

06:13 AM ET 06.23 | The Penguins' most prominent unrestricted free agents are forwards Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Petr Sykora, Miroslav Satan, Mike Zigomanis and Craig Adams, defensemen Rob Scuderi, Hal Gill and Philippe Boucher and goalie Mathieu Garon. Although Guerin, Fedotenko, Zigomanis and Scuderi appear to be their primary targets, Ray Shero is believed to have had discussions with Adams' representatives, and possibly those of some others. The Penguins have about $46 million of salary-cap space tied up for next season, and Scuderi, coming off a sensational playoff performance, is expected to command a salary of at least $2.5 million. Although that makes him a long shot to stay, Shero plans to discuss a new deal with his agent, Steve Bartlett. Most indications are that Scuderi will see what's available on the open market, although it's worth noting that defenseman Brooks Orpik did that a year ago before opting to return to the Penguins.

The Pens will be hurting on D if Scuds leaves, but there is enough in the system to overcome. Guerin should stay for a slight pay cut. I agree with those pics above

well, they've got a week to get it done, before it turns into a bidding war

June 23, 2009  07:43 AM ET

I heard a rumor, not sure of the validity, that the Pens and Guerin are discussing a 2 year, 2 mil/yr deal.

I can deal with that

June 23, 2009  08:09 AM ET

Also heard they offered Fedotenko 3 yrs, $2.4 mil per.....not sure about the validity of that either

June 23, 2009  08:16 AM ET

so does this mean pens are outa the jay bo race?

June 23, 2009  08:19 AM ET

They put together a winning team. Pens have to keep a winning team together before we anoint them the Ken Holland of the East.

If they are able to do it, it could be very very good for the NHL. The NHL needs a premeir rivalry. Detroit/Chicago is on its way back, Pens/Phi certainly is going strong, Ovechkin vs. Malkin vs. Crosby...

The NHL needed these story lines. Now if only they can get a better tv contract!

I don't think we were ever really in it...way too many other teams out there that are interested with more $$$ to spare

That rumor is false Shafu, according to Rob Rossi. Or, I should say "half true."

Although, they did offer Feds a contract for around that amount but at another 1year deal.

I think everyone needs to realize Scuds is gone. He wants around $4 Mil and another team will pay it. The Pens can't. We have enough on the farm to survive. Lovejoy and GoGo can fill in just fine. I like Scuds, but I don't feel the Pens (well, they can't anyway) pay him $4 Mil when they pay Orpik $3.5. Orpik is younger and in my opinion a better defenseman.

Word on the street has been for awhile that he wants to go to either Edmonton or Calgary. Him coming to Pittsburgh(as much fun as that would be) was never really an option.

Just replace Scuderi with Beachumin from Anaheim, he is better anyways.

Ahhh thank you for the heads up. Since I am in the wrong media market down here I have to rely on LGP...unfortunately, sometimes I do actually have to work at work :) Yeah Scuds is gone...I have come to total peace with that. Is Ulf Samuelsson a free agent this year?

Can you say screwed. Crysby and Malkin are good players, but they can not do it themselves. This was evident in the finals when Crysby did a disappearing act, and others stepped up to fill his void.

Crosby and Malkin just won a stanley cup with the junkiest wingers in the league. Satan and Sykora pretty much blow. I mean they were both sent down to the minors for non injury related reasons.

Also what is this disappearing act you speak of? i may be mistaken but didn't crosby have more goals than any other player on any of the other 16 teams in the playoffs? And second in points? And win that big silver cup like thingie. i forget the name of it.

If you think losing washed up wingers will affect the penguins, you clearly didn't pay attention to what happened in the offseason between 2007-2008 season and 2008-2009 season. Crosby has always be stuck with crappy wings, the only exception being Hoss for 30 games.

Scuderi is gone, but that doesn't matter. He isn't worth the money he will get, and the Penguin D without him is already better than almost every team in the league. Orpik, Gonchar, Letang, Goligoski, Eaton and probably Ben Lovejoy or Beaucheman.

They still have the best one two three combinations of centers in the league with Crosby Malking and staal

You obviously don't know what you are talking about, and just use threads like this to insult Crosby. IF YOU DID know what you were talking about you would know that the Pens have plenty of talent on the Farm ready to go. They aren't going to overpay for Scuds, bottom line, but he is replaceable. So, sorry to disappoint you. But the Pens will be in contention next year w/o him.

They need to resign Guerin, Fedotenko, and Scuderi first and foremost.

In that case, it won't happen. I don't think they have the room for all three. If Feds is getting what is being reported, and Guerin even takes a bit of a discount, there will not be enough for Scuds considering the cap. But hey, perhaps Shero can work some magic with these guys and convince them to take some "hometown discounts." Remains to be seen.

Scuderi is gone. GONE. he isn't worth three million a year. i love The Piece, but the pens could better use money elsewhere. What do you think would help us in the offseason, blowing 3 million a year on your 4th best defensemen? or puting that money towards resigning Guerin, Fed, or another FA wing?

The Pens have around 10 million dollars to sign 4 wingers, one back up goalie, and one defensemen. If they gave scuds his likely going rate of 3 million a year, that would leave the pens with seven milion to sign 5 guys. Also keep in mind the wingers that need signed are top line wingers. The pens need a scoring winger, and you won't get one for 2 million a year.

Also while i like guerin, i don't think he will play for 2 million a year when he was getting 4.5 million last year. I think fedotanko will be the only one who resigns.

June 23, 2009  11:07 AM ET

I still think they need to find a decent winger for Sid. I really hope they dont over pay for Guerin or Scuderi. Yeah he did well in the playoffs bud he didn't really slow A.O down. I'd like to see Shero get a REAL top six forward, Kunitz doesn't count.
