07:06 AM ET 06.23 | Chris Chelios' playing days as a Detroit Red Wing are over. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland met with Chelios today and thanked him for his 10 years of service with the club. But with the Wings' top four of Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Niklas Kronwall and Brad Stuart, plus the emergence of Jonathan Ericsson, there wasn't room for Chelios on the roster.

Tough to say just how much he has left. The Wings didn't use him in a awful lot of testy situations this past season, that's for sure. He still seems to be fairly serviceable as a defenceman - especially as a #5 or #6 d-man - and at a pay rate that is the minimum allowable under the CBA, he's very affordable too. If the Wings weren't so deep, he'd be staying for sure, but they just can't squeeze him in with the rest of the talent they have. I don't think Chicago is as bad of an idea as Sark seems to - the mentoring he could provide on the little tricks of the trade would be incredibly beneficial to their young corps of defencemen. Especially if he comes cheap. St. Louis and LA could use him in that role as well. As long as they have the defensive horses to not have to make Chelly be a major part of shutting down the league's faster players, he can help the team, in my opinion. Are there any other defencemen out there as effective as Chelios is, for as cheap as he is? I sure doubt it.

As much as I would love that he come back to the 'hawks (sentimental reasons), he's done. I believe he's going to retire.

is this a joke. I feel like there is an inside joke i have been missing for years. Did the NHL or wings think it would be funny to keep a washed up defensemen into his late forties. A guy who stopped being even a servicable defensemen years and years ago?
i honestly feel like we are being had. Why anyone would think detroit would keep him on considering the major decisions they will have to make this offseason, the upcoming cap decline after next season, and his usefullness is beyond me. This guy isn't even worth league minumum.
If i were a detroit fan i would be pissed this dude has been freeloading off my team and eating up cap space potentially used elsewhere for the last 10 years.

Chelios should be the poster boy for HGH. Then again, he'll need to get in line for that job.

If he's keeping a good young prospect from coming in and playing, they've go t to part ways.

I'll admit to liking Chelios his whole career. When the Habs traded him for Savard it made me dump them. I took it personally.

Didn't Chelios play his entire career with teams from the original six? I think his career started when the NHL only had six teams.

My favorite Chelios moment is when he said he wanted a few minutes alone with Bettman during the lockout. I believe he said he thought he could make Bettman see it his way or something along those lines. It was priceless.

Is he old - ya. Is he slow - ya. Does he have a shot - no. But having a guy like Cheli skating with the rookies on their AHL team made sense. Rookies got to learn from a been-there-done-that player and Detroit paid him next to nothing. Not that 750k is nothing but you get the point. Look at Detroit this year alone - rookies came up (Ericsson, Abdelkader, Helm, Leino) and played outstanding hockey. Good scouting and good training. His strength was his experience and it can be argued he's in the top 10 all time defensive players. LOL. I guess I just wanted to give the guy some props on his way out! Seemed like everyone was trashing the poor guy!

I think that the arguments that Chelli should no longer be a player are right on target. But he has class and savvy which can help the young core of a team to develop. Maybe one more year on as a player helping the next Crosby or Ovechkin. Or even better, a whole new career as a coaching mentor.
Chris, we love you. It is now time to use your experience to develop the game you love.
