DE recruit picks Pitt over Notre Dame

Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt said last week he was confident the Panthers would be able to assemble a good recruiting class for next year despite losing a few high-profile recruiting battles in Western Pennsylvania. After a weekend of stepping up their recruiting efforts on a number of key prospects, it appears that Wannstedt and his staff are making good on that promise. The Panthers received a verbal commitment over the weekend from Paterson (N.J.) Catholic standout defensive end T.J. Clemmings. Clemmings, who is 6 feet 6, 266 pounds, chose the Panthers over offers from a number of top programs, including Penn State, Notre Dame, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Miami and Rutgers.

I hope this is the year that Wannstedt and the Panthers can have a Top Ten season! I'm getting tired of watching the Pitt games through my fingers. The last few seasons have been like watching Tampa Bay playing: everything seems to be going their way until they implode at the end. Go Pitt!

I would really like to see a good guy have a top-notch season. Go Dave & go Pitt!!!

BTW - notice the difference between a picture of Wannstedt (see background of fans, players & staff) and a picture of Weis (eclipse)?

Dave Wannstedt is no Pop Warner...what a disappointment.

I guess the Texas and LSU boys stayed up late for that awesome first game in the CWS final three.

Yes, and Johnny Majors couldn't have taken Pitt all the way abiding by today's scholarship restrictions.

That really sucks for the Irish...could've used him. If he was being recruited by Florida he must be good.

2008 Sun Bowl: Oregon St. 3 Pitt 0.

Bad move kid..."you coulda been somebody...!"

Poor old Dave. Kicked out of the NFL and stuck in the college ranks. He has done some good out there though.

June 23, 2009  11:35 AM ET

While in the pros, Dave said coaching Pitt would be his dream job.

it was a great game. TX bullpen blew it and one of the few times it seems Augie may have made some tatical mistakes. LSU is a very good team, no doubt. Hope it goes to 3 games and TX wins.

Yes it was a very good game, exciting..Was on pin and needles all night... I wouldnt say TX bullpen blew it.. Maybe more like LSU hitters battled them well... TX does have the best staff and they didnt give up anything cheap IMO...

IMO both coaches made some mistakes.. TX pulling their starter maybe a lil to early.. and I know LSU left their starter in way to long...

TX is a very good team as well and I hope it goes only 2 games... 3rd game might drive me krazy

SI.com editors should massage their private parts with habanero pepper puree in pennance for their unforgivable neglect of the CWS.

Today's T&Rs are so thin that I just posted a half dozen jokes about them on yesterday's McCoy/Heisman thread...

If he is playing D, Dave Wannstedt is the man.

June 23, 2009  06:15 PM ET

That's O.K. !!!

Finally, a damn college football player with a brain. I can't believe Notre Dame has been able to con the richest talent in all of college football to get buried under the talentless dead weight of the worst coach in college football history.

4 Top 10 recruiting classes, and the only player anybody knows is Jimmy Clausen because he was suppose to be good and USC lost him to Notre Dame. I get a good laugh about it every time I think about it, like right now-- Ha!
