USC's Mustain battling academic issues
USC quarterback Mitch Mustain is attempting to resolve academic issues that could affect his eligibility for the coming season, Coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday. Carroll would not specify the issues and said there was "no timeline" or deadline for Mustain to resolve them. The Trojans report for training camp Aug. 7 and open their season Sept. 5 against San Jose State.

I suggest he enroll in FSU's summer-semester Music History/Appreciation class-on-the-web. Shhhhh - I hear you can get a good grade pretty easily <wink wink>.

Isn't this the kid that came out the same year as Tebow with just about as much hype? Talk about divergent careers.

Mustain's first year at Arkansas was '06-- pretty sure that was the same year Tebow started at uf.
In '06, not many people would have predicted Mustain would be a total wash-up, Jimmy Clausen would be almost a total wash-up, and Tebow and Bradford would have Heisman trophies. (We'll see if McCoy gets his.)

The darndest thing about college ball is the college part. Studying! Who'd have thought that could screw up the works for Mustain?

What is more pathetic is the role of the parents, who generated all of the problems at Arkansas for the coach, team and specific players. They forced Mustian's release so that he could go to a better (?) football school. Maybe they should have been worried about their son's education since this will serve him far longer than his throwing arm. It is understandable why a 19 y.o. athlete act like an idiot when he has parents like Mustain's.

Not rly, unless you think it's Pete Carroll's responsibility to take Mitch "Don't call me Dave" Mustain's classes for him.

I don't really care for Mustain too much. Houston Nutt (I think he was the coach at the time) had a fantastic year with Arkansas using Darren McFadden was the RB (SEC West Champs). Their offensive scheme was changed throught the year to showcase his talent and abilities (since it worked) and they went more with a running than passing offense. Well Mustain and his parents (and a few others) were unhappy and felt lied to. They left and the blame was placed on Nutt and he left too. At least that's how I can remember it.
If Mustain was so good, they WOULD have built the offense around him. And that not to say Mustain wasn't good, but McFadden was better.

Hell,if I had Felix Jones and Darren McFadden,I would have built my offense around them too. The hell with Mitch Mustain.

I don't know if he was in the same high school class as Tebow, but I recall during recruitment he was considered the best high school quarterback in the country. By the time he's done at USC, I figure he'll be maybe the tenth best high school quarterback in the country.

Compare Mustain with his high school receiver buddy Williams, who also left Arkansas and is working out great for the Trojans. (I think he led the team in receiving....) The difference might be this: maybe Williams did his homework (his football homework!) and knew the Trojans needed receivers, where Mustain was relying on his own hype. I'm speculating, of course, but everyone who goes to USC has to know the competition is tough. But heck, why not give Mustain the benefit of a doubt: maybe he knows that even backup USC quarterbacks have decent careers ahead of them in the NFL. Even if you don't get the break Cassel did, life could be a lot worse.

Just a disappointment anyway you look at him. He went to Arkansas and left under everything that was happening there and then never emerged at USC you would expect a good QB to do, especially with that talent.
Also I always thought he has an air about him that he thought he was better than everybody else and this academic issue sort of reiterates that for me.

No, not really. Some athletes aren't big academic achievers. In fact, a lot of athletes aren't. But the only way this is negative publicity is if there was a cheating scandal a la FSU, which there clearly isn't. Beyond that, this is a third string QB (with lots of potential), so it really just doesn't matter if his grades are borderline or not.

There were rumors that he couldn't understand USC's passing playbook as well and the one he did well in in Arkansas was so simplified due to McFadden carrying the load. Maybe he really is trying but just couldn't pass.
