Twins: Ayala asked for trade

07:07 AM ET 06.24 | Luis Ayala wanted so badly to be the chief setup man for closer Joe Nathan, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday, that he asked to be traded once it became apparent that he couldn't have that role. But the detail that might have cinched Ayala's departure from Minnesota was his admitted motivation for wanting the job: a better contract next year.
