09:31 AM ET 06.24 | Wayne Gretzky would like to see NHL hockey in both the Valley and Hamilton. The Coyotes coach is watching Jim Balsillie and the NHL spar over the future of the Arizona franchise and hockey in Southern Ontario. "It's been tough for everyone," Gretzky said Tuesday at an 2010 Olympic sponsorship event. "It's been tough for fans of the Phoenix Coyotes, it's been tough for the organization, but on the other side of it, Hamilton is a great city and one day it will probably eventually get an NHL franchise, so it's a tough scenario for both sides. Right now obviously we just are all sitting back and waiting to see what that outcome is and, to this point in time, we really don't know, there is no definite answer. "The best-case scenario would be eventually that both cities have an NHL team."

And there is that ever-so-stupid picture of Gretzky again.

June 24, 2009  09:45 AM ET

That isn't the best case scenario at all. The best case scenario is this team being moved out of Arizona in the 2010 off-season. I don't care where it goes at this point, it just needs to be out of that city and state like nobody's business. I could care less about Hamilton at this point. I still think KC is stupid, but that's another issue altogether.

And saying is "tough for everyone", then listing the Phoenix "fans" kinda makes me laugh. We making up imaginary friends now Wayne?

June 24, 2009  10:09 AM ET

Gretzky doesn't want Phoenix to move to Hamilton, why?, because he lives 300 miles away with wife Janet and the kids, it's a desirable location for him, his wishing their was a team in Hamilton is just a smoke screen to get the Canada folk off his back.......

But the fact remains Canada, the best player in history bolted your country for a blonde, addicted gambler and the fake glitz and glamour of Hollywood and has never shown an interest in returning.

Cheers to Mario Lemeuix for not bolting the franchise that he put on the map and eventually saved from becoming obsolete!

June 24, 2009  10:27 AM ET

Gretz also wants World peace and a pony!

Not only that, but he's deeply involved with a team that was transplanted from Winnipeg. I'm still amazed that more Canadians don't hold that against him.

Id like a pony..

He wasn't with Phoenix when they left Winnipeg. Gretzky is a great Canadian, he spends most of the off-season in Toronto and he goes to lots of Leaf games, since his father Walter is a season ticket holder. Gretzky also never pulled a Brett Hull and played for the Americans, he has always played for Team Canada in every opportunity he has and he has managed them many times, like when they won Gold in '02

June 24, 2009  11:05 AM ET

There will be NO questioning of Wayne Gretzky's loyalties to Canada on this site. None.

I'd coach hockey in Haiti if I were gonna get paid $14 million a year to do it!

June 24, 2009  11:09 AM ET

a few things. is this the only picture CNNSI has of Gretzky?

Second. I know there has been a lot of debate as to who was the better player, Gretzky or Lemieux. The stats point to gretzky, but there are other considerations like Mario's cancer and back issues. Whoever you side with I think we can all agree who has had a better "career" since leaving the ice. Without question it has been Mario. He bought the pens with money they owed him and his own personal money(along with Burkel). He kept them in pittsburgh after multiple offers to move them. He decided that the penguins should rebuilt at the beginning of the decade, which is always painful, but led to us getting Orpik, Fleury, Crosby, Malkin in the early first round. He used smart business tactics and bluffed moving the pens to get Luke RavenStahl, Dan Onorato, and Gov Ed Rendell to help fund the new Consol Energy Center that will be ready for the 2010-2011 season. He has a team that won a cup and is poised to win more.

Gretzky well, i don't even want to waste my time describing what he has "accomplished" since leaving his skates behind.

And for the record, the Oilers told HIM they would have to trade him, it wan't him asking to be moved. LA just had the best package - including Janet's burdgeoning career that started and ended with that Police Academy movie - to offer the Oil, and thus, the Wayner ended up in Hollywood

June 24, 2009  11:17 AM ET

This article is so stupid. The NHL, at least certain teams, are hemoraging money. Why would you add another team when you can't support the teams you already have. There is nothing wrong with trying bold experiments, sometimes they work like the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, but other times it doesn't work like the Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes. The only problem is that the NHL need to understand when you take a gamble and fail, you cut your loses and try something else. You don't keep with a losing gamble untill it bankrupts you.

The US government isn't going to bail out the NHL(despite the fact they are bailing out everything else even though we don't have the cash). The NHL needs to learn from its mistakes. Go to markets where you are guaranteed fans and income(see:large canadian cities) and out of potential markets where hockey has no track record.

Winnepeg or Hamilton need teams, Nashville and Phoenix don't

I don't have an irrational hatred of bettman like most, but i do think he is making a terrible decision if he backs the Coyotes staying in phoenix.

plus the nhl kind of pushed the trade behind the scenes, because the nhl was fading on the american west coast, and they thought this would renew interest, which it did.

i don't blame him for leaving edmonton, but you can blame him for all the **** decisions he made since he left los angeles

June 24, 2009  11:19 AM ET

Like running a team that won Canada's first Olympic Gold Medal in over 50 years, BenBen? Or running the team that won the World Cup? Or signing on with his continued sponsorship deals that rake in the cash for him Ford, MacDonald's, etc)? Opening a vineyard in the Niagara area that is pushing wine out like crazy? Owning one of the busiest restaurants in downtown Toronto? Receving the Order of Canada? Yeah, what a shameful post-hockey career HE'S having. Give me a break.

Lemieux has done well in Pittsburgh, no doubt, but let's make sure we look at the whole picture, not just the part that's convenient to our sides of the debate...

June 24, 2009  11:28 AM ET

Sorry Ben, I get riled up when it comes to defendin the Man is all. I still think the Rags were a good team to go out with. His loyalty to Keenan is what had him engineer the trade to St. Louis.

The Phoenix buy-in was smart at the time - there were unreal tax benefits built in when the team originally moved there, but those benefits have gone away since. He was smart enough to realise the team had no real draw, and got himself named Head Coach to remedy that situation, and has improved year after year on that end of things. Plus, he makes $14 million to coach them! He may be making more as coach than Lemieux is as owner, haha!

Plus, on top of all that, he was smart enough to get Janet to take the blame for all the gambling! Brilliant!

In the end, Gretz knows he can't move with any team that comes to Canada, because he will never have a life, or privacy, no matter which city it may be. He can't be an owner in Canada, or he'll get the media coverage that is usually reserved for the Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohans of the world!

June 24, 2009  11:51 AM ET

He wants a team in Hamilton, he just doesn't want to be with that team. That's all he is trying to say. Everyone knows there should be a team in Hamilton, and there should only be 1 in Florida, none in Nashville and Atlanta, etc.. Why wouldn't Gretz want the franchise to stay in Phoenix. No pressure, great weather and can live a somewhat normal life.

The dipolmatic Great One speaks again. The more he talks, the more I wish he'd just shut up. He should leave the talking to slimey politicians.

Wasn't she in some movie about a tutor or something? I have a vague recollection of seeing tatas?

Probably eventually Gretzky will again do something of note.

But maybe possibly he might not.

Either way I'm glad he's in Phoenix. I don't have to see him much when he's there.
