Knicks dealing for Darko

The Knicks are on the verge of acquiring the second pick of the NBA draft. The second pick of the 2003 draft, that is. A deal that would send Quentin Richardson to Memphis for Darko Milicic, the player selected after LeBron James and before Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade, is close to being finalized. The 7-foot Milicic has been a disappointment since entering the league but he would give the Knicks a shot-blocker on their front line. Both Milicic and Richardson are entering the last year of their contracts. For weeks, team president Donnie Walsh has been trying to trade up to acquire Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, who coincidentally could be drafted second by Memphis.

so the knicks want to give up QRich to gamble on Rubio in a draft filled with PGs, and acquire Darko??? theyre in worse shape than I thought... and I thought it was pretty bad!

June 25, 2009  06:12 AM ET

Sounds like the Knicks are on the verge of a new era of disappointment.

Why not try to rebuild around solid big men rather than flashy point guards - remember Marbury?

"Knicks dealing up for Rubio at No. 2"

It seems more that Knicks are trading for "previous No. 2 pick" (Darko) than this yea

June 25, 2009  06:41 AM ET

... year No. 2 , if it's for Richardson.

If they want this year No. 2 pick too, they will have to send more than that.

If you want some suspens in your title, just put "dealing up for a No. 2 pick". But in that case, it's not for Rubio.

June 25, 2009  07:02 AM ET

This trade wont help anyone at all except Memphis an whoever they pick at #8 if they added that to Memphis could find the perfect Big Man to hwlp them out, an the KNicks agian will not make the Playoff's an Rubio as a 19 Yr Old kid who avg. 9.8 ppg an around 5 Assists will either explode or just be s olid PG but not a Tony Parker for comparison.
But when he goes to a new team hell have a couple All Star Years.
Good Job Dumping a G nut now its time to get a big man like ThaBeet even if he doesnt score alot. ITS GOING TO ALLOW SACRAMENTO TO NABSTEPHAN CURRY or James Harden whose going to move to PG wth K-Mart Healthy at SG an Avg 24 PPG., Nocioni at SF, an Hawes an last years 1st rder 11PPG an 7RPG a game the kid from Rider an Hawes both stepped up there gme, if we could get PYSCO T at #23 or move up an nab him our team would have a new Bench Mob.Garcia frm Louisville at SG/SF,Udrih at PG, Tyler or another big man at PF, Rashad McCants at SG played big whn we got him , an some shmuck C we need to deal an find another,BOBBY J at PG, THE DEVEOLPING SF OF THE FUTURE DONTE GREEN.

hahahaha soft **** euro players hahahaha NONE OF THEM HAVE EVER BEEN GOOD & dont say soft Dirk is any good either his game is to flop & draw fouls SOFT

June 25, 2009  07:14 AM ET

as a spurs fan, i couldnt disagree more. both parker and ginobili are talented players with rings, and neither are soft. manu is as tough as they come. and theyre both from europe, obviously.

June 25, 2009  07:19 AM ET

The Knicks will pick another bum with the #8 pick because this GM Walsh don't have freaking clue; I have been a Knicks fan for over 20 years and I am getting pretty tired now; the Knicks need to make some big move and stop thinking about 2010 because Lebron and company is not coming to a team without an identity or a clue no matter how much endorsement money the Knicks throw around; it's time for bold leadership (see San Antonio, Boston Celtics, Lakers). Q-Rich for Darko is like decorating the living room when the house is on fire. If Curry and Rubio can't be had then the Knicks should trade the pick with Portland for Bayless; after the draft sign and trade David Lee and Nate Robinson in separate deals for young promising players and forget about 2010.

June 25, 2009  07:21 AM ET

The Knicks are getting a shot blocker and a 6' 4'' ultra quick pure point guard who is more experienced than any point guard in the draft. Don't forget Tony Parker and JJ Barea are international point guards that are doing very well in this league so this is not a gamble. As for Darko if he doesn't average a double double for the Knicks next season I don't know I'll be shocked given all he has to do is outplay Eddy Curry for the starting job. Sene also showed great flashes at protecting the rim... this is definitely an upgrade for the Knicks...

With this trade we can now keep David Lee by restructuring whatever contract he gets to suit our needs. Lets say he gets a 5 year 50 mil contract we can simply have him take minimum the first two years and spread the rest over the three remaining years and even make it player options if he wants.

Things are looking up... Lets go Knicks!

What about Sarunus Javikgves - that Pacer point guard who was much hyped but never lived up to expectations.

June 25, 2009  07:48 AM ET

I can understand the Knicks trading Q,he hasn't done anything since they acquire him other than talking about Marbury. But Darko, the guy can't jump over a tooth pick what kind of shotblocking can he supply for the Knicks.Rubio is a turnover waiting to happen,no offense and no defense then people have the guts to compare this kid to Pistol Pete. What a bad joke that is?

June 25, 2009  08:04 AM ET

While Darko is a bust, he is still a solid big man and still quite young. Good move.

Technically Ginobili is from South America, not Europe.

Ginobili is from Argentina, not Europe.

Poor Darko. If he had been the 23rd pick, we'd never be having these conversations and he would be happy someplace putting up a 11.8/7.9 per game without everyone giving him a full body cavity search every time he entered the game.

Darko's sad fate is on Dumar's hands...not Darko's. I don't remember him ever claiming to be the second best player in the civilized world. That was Joe Dumars. Then Larry Brown buried him to stick it to Joe. The kid was jerked around badly from jump street. I think its about time we forgave Darko for another man's sin.

June 25, 2009  08:29 AM ET

I heard about the Darko and Q. Rich deal yesterday but the number 2 got thrown into it, too? If the number 2 is involved then I got to say this is a good deal. Look, Darko is a bust but he's a bust with one year left on his deal while Q. Rich has done nothing with the Knicks and has a player option for the 2010-2011 season worth 9 million that he was going to honor.

To do this deal, give up only Q. Rich and probably come away with that number 2 is a good deal for the Knicks, and once again this shows why the Grizz are screwed because that number 2 pick is valuable and it looks like they are just giving it away.

June 25, 2009  08:37 AM ET

I had no idea argentina is in europe...someone needs to give me a refund for my defective globe!!

June 25, 2009  08:41 AM ET

I dont see why Memphis would give up the #2 pick-They'll pick Thabeet without a doubt. I hope the Knicks get him so the Eastern Conference guards can open the can of a** whooping on him!!!

June 25, 2009  08:42 AM ET

doesn't matter who they pick cause the "KNICK SUCK"

I completely agree with you. Darko has received unfair scrutiny for his entire career (Remember during the Pistons runs to the finals the cameras would focus on Darko on the bench and the commentators would laugh). It's not like he is Kwame Brown bad. Darko can at least make a shot.
