Shaq-less Suns eyeing B.J. Mullens?

Dealing Shaquille O'Neal could mean the Suns look at the only center option at No. 14 in Ohio State's 20-year-old B.J. Mullens. He would be an athletic, offensively skilled balance to Robin Lopez but he is raw.

raw or just not that good? if i were a suns fan, i would be screaming bloody murder... trading shaq for 2 guys who probably will never suit up for phoenix and a weak draft pick, then drafting this guy?? sounds like hiring Kerr to be GM was the worst decision of all...

Kerr might get a lot of heat for this deal but no team was going to give up any real talent for Shaq at 20mil for a year. The Suns needed to save money and this was the best deal to do that, PHX saves 10mil the minute the ink dries and maybe more with a Wallace buyout. They did what they had to do.
As for the Cavs, its a no brainer, they give up little, its not a long term solution but it also saves their flexability for 2010. They were probably not going to be able to get a all-star 4 thru trade, they dont have any talent assets to trade in return, so they did the next best thing.

Suns save money...but it's going to be a looooooooooooonnnnnnnng season for them.

June 25, 2009  07:28 AM ET

but at the same time it's not going to be an extended season.

The Suns are pretty much guaranteeing a spot in the lottery next year again.

Good luck with this reincarnation of Joe Wolf/Joe Kliene/Jon Koncak ...

June 25, 2009  08:39 AM ET

Wow... haha talk about a fall from grace...

June 25, 2009  08:39 AM ET

Makes sense but you could just throw Robin Lopez in at Center and play Amar'e at the Power Forward slot and go from there.

If I were Kerr (thankfully I'm smarter than he is) I would concentrate on getting some athleticism and size out on the wing. Austin Daye is raw but he would be a good choice for the Suns. So would be Earl Clark from Louisville. They are both SF/PF hybrids that could do some good in that system.

Of course I am assuming the Suns keep the number 14 pick but knowing the Suns they will probably end up trading it for cash like they normally do. You can build a franchise out of all the picks they have forfeited over the years.

Can you say BUST!

June 25, 2009  08:54 AM ET

So let me get this straight. Nash couldn't play with Shaq, but he's ok with trying to make chicken soup out of chicken sh-- with this Mullens character? And people accuse my Knicks of making bad decisions. Step aside Knickerbockers, the Suns have taken your boob of the year title.

June 25, 2009  09:01 AM ET

Boneheaded move by the Suns.

Onto more important subjects. So what is the next nickname for the "Big Cactus"?

June 25, 2009  09:07 AM ET

If I was Phoenix. I would try to get a big man that can defend and run the court to fit in with their scheme. A quick fix is carlos boozer. He is probably the best pick and roll big man out there this year. And he plays defense.

Another quick fix could be anderson varejeo. He is 7 foot. He runs and he hustles. he doesn't require touches and get his points off of pick and roll and putbacks.

If i was Phoenix... I would also try to do whatever they have to do to get Chris Bosh the following season.

BJ Mullins is not the answer.

I just remember that they have the Lopez twin so the don't really need BJ Mullins.

More of Steve Kerr's "Hope and Change" policy, or was that Obama's?

I disagree-
his salary is coming off the books-
they could've EASILY gotten more.......IF THEY TRIED

Look at what milwaukee got for RJ.....
you don't think the suns would've been better off getting RJ
rather than the garbage they received???

No this was a RUSHED move by both STUPID GM's ferry and kerr
- Shaq will DEFINATELY help the cavs- short run

I've got just 2 words about the Suns. They're done. B.J. Mullens is a 7 footer that averaged 8 points a game at Ohio State. Kerr has officially lost his mind. Mullens is the only 7 footer in this draft, but Kerr would be better off scouring the D-League.

WEAKNESSES:
- All-around offensive polish
- Turnover prone
- Ability to put ball on floor
- Advanced post moves
- Commitment to playing defense
- Defensive awareness
- Defensive fundamentals
- Man to man defense
- Off-ball defense
- Basketball IQ
- Doesn't always play hard
- Experience
- Focus
- Likelihood of reaching potential
- Not ready to contribute immediately
- Questionable intangibles
- Work ethic
- Got by on instincts at college level
- Not productive enough
- Assist to turnover ratio
- Passing skills
- Average rebounder
- Free throw shooting
- Jump-shot

do some people just not understand the concept of expiring contracts and cap space?

I understand that PERFECTLY as a Knick fan.

But the point is-
you are taking a team that needs only MINOR tweaking and
GUTTING it
If your team is AWFUL- ala NY, Minny, etc.....YES clear space
But when you have SOLID pieces and can compete....why gut?

Hey, you can't blame the Liberal Arts majors for not understanding that.
