Kidd likely to re-sign with Mavs

Because of his comfort level with his teammates and city, and of course, the chance to get an $8 million-$9 million contract, odds are that free agent Jason Kidd will re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Yet, he has an intrigue with the New York Knicks that is mutual, and a Knicks source says they plan to try and meet with him once free agency starts on July 1. Kidd is considering possibilities with Portland and Cleveland, but he always loved New York a lot more than New Jersey. He built good relationships with Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni and Portland's Nate McMillan when they were assistant coaches for Team USA. Barring a sign-and-trade deal, the Knicks would be limited to offering Kidd the midlevel exception.

He is better than any free agent alternatives unless they wanna trade - but even then who else can they realistically get?

Got to agree. Kidd is a good fit for the Mavs. I would let the market for his services play out before giving him an offer though, just to make sure I don't overpay him.

Poor Kidd. The Mavs are losers.

And the Knicks are not? Watch basketball please. This team has won 50 plus for over 9 years...and hasnt missed the playoffs in years...

What the mavs need to do is get rid of Dampier.. He is useless.. And they need to draft and good scoring guard if they are going to keep the JET on the bench. Because JJ Barera is not going to be a consisitant 15-20 point scorer.

They could possibly get Flip Murray I think he is on the market this off-season. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Question for anyone????? When is J.R. Smith aka SNIPER going to be on the market. I don't think it is this year but it should be soon. Mavs should start looking at him. I think he would fit in good with the MAVS.

welcome back kidd, the summer of 09 is about to get interesting

June 25, 2009  10:23 AM ET

i agree that dampier is useless. resigning kidd really doesn't help or hurt the mavs. i guess they could do worse, but it's not like he's gonna be a major factor in them getting to the finals. dallas needs to bring in another big name to help dirk, before he becomes less effective as he ages. or maybe cuban is waiting till the end of next season to shop the free agency options.

No. My Knicks are terrible too. Note the word "too". The difference between you and me is that I know my team is in bad shape.

A team coming of getting to the second round of the playoffs and having the same core is not in bad shape...

But the West even got harder. Lakers and Spurs are another plateau right now... so lets see what Cuban does.

Spurs are not on another plateau they're dropping off, a ton. They're old and not getting any younger. R Jefferson just makes them older and less of a defensive team...I like Dallas' position right now, Cuban is willing to spend and expand. I'm looking forward to the Mavs off season.

June 26, 2009  12:33 AM ET

Kidd is old Jefferson is not. Mavs didn't improve.

June 26, 2009  01:26 AM ET

big deal

June 26, 2009  01:28 AM ET

how does RJ make them older? He is 29, they traded three players all over the hill for him. Plus he averages over 20 a game and can lead a team when is called upon. I am glad we signed RJ and not V.Carter who makes about 8 million more a year. (same numbers)

We need to bring Tiago Splitter over already. We need a good big to compete with the Lakers.
I think we all know they are re-signing both Ariza and Odom. Duncan is good but can't compete with their frontcourt alone(Gasol, Bynum)

RJ's age may not be old but tell that to his knees.
