Rangers in hunt for Heatley

The Rangers remain in the hunt to acquire Dany Heatley from Ottawa, even though they have no intention of surrendering any of their prized young talent in order to obtain the sniper. A well-placed source reports Ottawa GM Bryan Murray, under pressure to move Heatley before a $4 million up-front payment on his $8M salary for 2009-10 comes due on Wednesday, acknowledged yesterday he hasn't received an offer of close to equal value for Heatley, who has five years and $35M remaining on a contract that comes with a $7.5M annual cap hit.

I hope they get him. It will rip the locker room into pieces. And whatever is bad for the Rangers is good for the NHL.

June 26, 2009  07:37 AM ET

Getting nothing of equal value huh, wonder why................LOOK AT HIS CONTRACT!!

June 26, 2009  07:55 AM ET

The New York Post huh? That paper has the Rangers signing everybody in the league on a day to day basis it seems. There is no need for any other NHL team, because the Rangers own all the players.

What is Sather offering if there is no youth headed back the other way? Murray CAN'T be dumb enough to take Redden back, and he has Spezza so he isn't wanting Gomez and his contract. Drury might not be a bad principle, but there would have to be more to it, I would think. Personally speaking, I don't think the Rags are truly in the running at all, but I could be proven wrong for the first time in my life...

Funny.

And after one season Heatley will want out of New York because he doesn't like their consession stands.

June 26, 2009  09:29 AM ET

the other G.M's know about the $4 Million dollar roster bouns and will keep sending bottom feeder offers. i think he'll stay in Ottawa as this is one of those contracts that's too rich for the salary cap era. maybe some of the bottom 3rd teams will have cap space but he would never ok a trade to say, Atlanta, Nashville, Florida or Pheonix. Stay in Ottawa, shut up and play hockey; make your 35 million and be satisfied. play harder and maybe Clouston will give you back a premium role again.

June 26, 2009  09:44 AM ET

it never fails the rangers try to get every good player but they end up not making the playoffs or losing in the playoffs. dont they ever learn?

June 26, 2009  09:59 AM ET

How in the name of hell will they find the salary cap if they want to keep all their current lineup?

June 26, 2009  09:59 AM ET

I don't want to see Heatley on the Rangers. He's a good regular season player, but useless in the playoffs. Plus, ever since the 'accident' in Atlanta, he's damaged goods. Let him waste away in Ottawa.

June 26, 2009  10:20 AM ET

Heatley straight up for Lundqvist!

And for all those sarcastically challenged out there, that was a joke. Just for future reference.

Its easy...ahem.....SEND REDDEN TO THE MINORS!!!!

June 26, 2009  10:36 AM ET

Oh he fits perfect as a Ranger, does he not. Over-paid under-performer.

June 26, 2009  10:50 AM ET

It's from LB from the Post, meaning he makes it up so there is no truth to it. I am sure Ottawa will trade for Rosival like the article suggested. Hey, you want a 50 goal scorer, we will give you a 4th dman that gets paid 5 mil a year. DEAL

That's about as stupid a statement as I've seen since....gunslinger was here.
What would make you say something that ridiculous?

June 26, 2009  11:09 AM ET

being able to pull this off requires skill, foresight and basic skill as a GM.
Sather posses all but three of those things, I'm sorry to say.

June 26, 2009  11:13 AM ET

He is not going anywhere any time soon. Who wants to pick up that 4mil tab. He might get move after July 1, but this looks like the sens are just faking all of this so they can say to him that they tried.

There are only a handful of teams that can afford him, and the Habs and Leafs are probably not in the running.

June 26, 2009  11:22 AM ET

They don't have the cap space, nor the players to give up unless the give up Staal, which is too much.

June 26, 2009  11:30 AM ET

Honestly, I am not a Rangers fan but I happen to think that Heatley would be dangerous on the Rangers. If the Rangers could find a way of getting him that could further spice things up in the Atlantic Division. I would hate to see him 6 times a season.

With that being said it is a good thing that New York has a great mass transit system.

last time I checked, Rangers have been to the playoffs last 4 years...and 29 teams all end up losing in the playoffs. Everybody wants to play in the greatest city in the world, wouldn't you?

Over paid, Yes. Under-performer? Definitely not. The Guys an All-Star and he's the type of finisher that this team needs. How about yous guys worry about what your team's going to do and stop worrying about the Rangers.

Doesnt Redden have a no movement clause. This report is bs. Murray isnt going to give up Heatley without a top prospect or young player included in the deal. He isnt going to trade Heatley after he pays that 4 mil upfront so it looks like there is only one week left to make a deal for him until the trade deadline rolls around. The Senators would be dumb to take Gomez or Drury's horrible contracts back for Heatley anyway. They might as well play a disgruntled Heater who scores more points than either Ranger at the same price.
