Rubio pushing for Knicks move?

The Ricky Rubio sweepstakes is back on! Knicks president Donnie Walsh said yesterday he's calling Timberwolves general manager David Kahn to see if the Spanish point guard phenom can be had after Rubio's father told a Spanish Web site that Rubio likely will stay in Spain for the next two seasons instead of paying off a buyout. In another sign he wants nothing to do with Minnesota, Rubio, an 18-year-old, 6-foot-5 showman, was not at yesterday's introductory press conference in Minneapolis, preferring to relax in New York -- a good omen for Knicks fans. Kahn said he didn't ask him to attend.

I didn't know that Steve Francis was reincarnated...

I mean if Minny wants to give us Rubio for one of our expiring scrubs.....I'll take him......
If Minny wants Eddy Curry - I'd Personally forklift him to the airport

If Donnie even THINKS about giving Lee away for him - I will NOT be so happy

The Knicks should offer ALL of their point guards. It was made very clear in the first round of the draft that is all that the Timberwolves are interested in.

so what you're saying is that you think we can pass Eddy Curry off as a pg?

June 27, 2009  08:55 AM ET

The jig would probably up when they measured him at his physical...probably. I guess the Knicks could just tell the Wolves that he had swollen upward to go with his swelling outward. I could see them buying that.

June 27, 2009  09:02 AM ET

Toney Douglas and Nate Robinson should suffice for a Rubio trade. On the other hand if the wolves want to do a bigger deal that will involve Lee and Curry that's fine too. Knicks do have some leverage as loosing or keeping both Nate & Lee will not have a drastic effect on the W/L column next season.

June 27, 2009  09:24 AM ET

The Knicks really don't have anything that the Wolves should value in a trade for Rubio. Maybe they'll get a thrid team involved to make it work.

I could imagine a trade of Lee and Curry for Rubio, Thomas, Cardinal and Madsen (3 expiring contracts). Minnesota has to many players under contract (14, I believe), so they have to trade or buyout some of them. But I don't know how Lee would fit in with Love and Jefferson (maybe some kind of 3 big men rotation as the Lakers do).

June 27, 2009  09:52 AM ET

why would that little kid want to go to NY, they lose every year and plus i doubt minnesota will trade him anyway. so if he threatends to go to spain then go! the wolves are ok with that. so he needs to shut up and play

June 27, 2009  09:56 AM ET

Nate Robinson and Ricky Rubio would be a good 1-2 punch next year that would get fans to MSG.

June 27, 2009  10:18 AM ET

Rubio needs either some meteorology lessons or geography lessons. He doesn't want to play in Minny because its "too cold", yet he would be OK with a trade to NYC? Has he ever been to NY in January?

June 27, 2009  10:27 AM ET

Just because Rubio wants to play in New York doesn't mean he will get to play there next season. This isn't Burger King, you can't have it your way.

The Knicks can't offer that much. Minnesota doesn't need another power forward (especially when they have Smith, Gomes, Love, Pekovic, and Jefferson (not to mention a few garbage time forwards) and the Knicks certainly can't offer their 2010 pick. The reality is there are a lot of team who can offer a lot more.

That of course is assuming Minnesota is even placing a for sale sign on Rubio's back. If Minnesota keeps him for two years, he will be 20 when he arrives with more experience under his belt.

June 27, 2009  10:32 AM ET

While NY system it is ment to be run by a very good offensive PG and Rubio has his limits, he would flourish as he is very athletical and has a wide court vision.

On the other hand, I do not see Nate or Lee staying with the Knicks but I also cant see NY resigning and packaging them along Curry.

- Rubio & Smith & Cardinal & Madsen & Thomas & future picks (MIN) for Nate & Lee & Curry (NY)
And while it may seems like NY gave a lot for a unproven rookie, just to accomplish a cost cutting move for next year, they would first have to increase their payroll this year with the resignings of Lee & Nate, in order for the trade to happen.

I also doubt that they can save money with the buyout of some of the contracts as Cardinal, Madsen & Thomas would be retiring after this season and would not accept a cut.

Believe me, Lee will be the 1st oprion. Minnesota will become a contender, Rubio will bust, and the Knicks will suck until the next media creation comes along.

June 27, 2009  10:34 AM ET

Believe me, Lee will be the 1st option. Sorry

The whole story around this kid is b.s. I mean who "****" does he think he is? I don't normal wish ill will on anyone, but this kid is begging for it. And contrary to all the hype surrounding him, he hasn't proven a 'dad-gum' thing to justify his and his camp's behavior. This is like the biggest hype job I've seen since Greg Oden and methinks it shall turn out the same way. First he doesn't show up for the presser in Minnesota, but he's cooling it in New York? WTF over!?! Never mind irresponsible and juvenile... this isn't even professional. You know, I hope he gets exactly what he wants... his first three years in the "fair weather fan" center of the basketball world. Then he can experience praise and ridicule in the same breath.

what will get the fans back to MSG is WINNING.
a back-court combo of those 2 will NOT translate into winning
it will translate into a DISASTER

June 27, 2009  11:02 AM ET

Does this kid realize you don't get to tell people where you will play after you get drafted? He entered the NBA draft, this is the risk he took. Now shut up and get your butt to Minneapolis.

June 27, 2009  11:23 AM ET

you could give us the entire Knicks roster and we wouldn't want a single one of them - just quit meddling in our situation, I wonder if this is tampering, but since the NY and Boston teams are such love dolls of the NBA and the sports media I guess they can do and say what they want. I guarantee you if Kahn started talking about wanting Hill in MN or casting aspersions about him the was Walsh is doing NY sportswriters, SI and ESPN would be screaming for Stern to have us stripped of draft choices or give "poor" Knicks Rubio for compesation

June 27, 2009  11:29 AM ET

You are all crazy. The Knicks have nothing that the T-Wolves would want. Why would they want Lee when they have Love playing the exact same position? Why would they want the likes of Robinson when they drafted Flynn? And you keep coming up with trades where the T-Wolves take big contracts. The Wolves are trying to shed payroll, not take it on.

You keep throwing Curry and Jeffries out there as if anyone is dumb enough to trade for Jeffries or Curry. Only FIU might be dumb enough to do that this year.

The only trade I could possibly see is something like Songalia, Telfair, and Rubio for the Knicks 2011 1st rounder and Chris Duhon. The Wolves should let Rubio rot in Spain before taking on more payroll.
