Joseph Fauria, a former Encino Crespi High tight end who was a backup last season as a freshman at Notre Dame, said Friday he has been granted a release and will transfer to a Pacific 10 Conference school, with UCLA among the schools he hopes to consider. Notre Dame announced earlier this week that Fauria had left school for "personal reasons." Fauria was not going to be allowed to play this season.

Congrats, TerryAve. Keep us informed.

What exactly did this kid do? What were the "personal reasons". Anyone, anyone.

June 27, 2009  10:35 AM ET

I guess "personal reasons" means that they want to keep it personal. In any case he seems like a good kid who feels UCLA is a better fit. I hope he has great success there...

Just go for "healthy" -- I have one of each, and in the long run it does not matter--Congratulations and FIGHT ON !!

This has been a growing trend in South Bend for the last few years. Nose tackle Pat Kuntz missed spring '08, cornerback Darrin Walls missed the '08 season and cornerback Gary Gray missed the Hawaii Bowl and all of '09 spring practice, all for the "personal reasons" reasoning. With a large degree of certainty, it would be safe to say that "personal reasons" is a code word for poor grades.

I'm not trying to feed you that, "Notre Dame is a university of high academic standards," but that is preciously what this issue is. Only Stanford and Notre Dame holds it's student athletes to such a high standard of excellence. That's why Lou Holtz left(he wanted Randy Moss), it's why they brought in Tyrone.(who coached at Stanford before Notre Dame) If Notre Dame fields a championship caliber team in the next few seasons, you can be assured that it would finest collection of STUDENT-athletes in the BCS era. Do yourself a favor and look up Jim Harbaugh's comments about his alma mater.

Here is the Randy Moss story for those who can't remember...
Moss's dream was to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but he also considered going to Ohio State, where his half-brother, Eric, had played offensive tackle. According to former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz, Moss was "the greatest high school athlete I had ever seen ??? a bigger Deion Sanders."
After originally signing a letter of intent to play college football with Notre Dame in 1995, Moss took part in a racially-charged fight at his high school that left one person hospitalized. He entered a plea of guilty to battery, and received probation along with a 30-day suspended jail sentence. Notre Dame subsequently revoked his scholarship, but this did not stop another high-profile college football program from giving him a chance. Notre Dame officials suggested he attend Florida State due to the reputation of its coach, Bobby Bowden, for handling troubled players. However, because of his signed letter of intent at Notre Dame, the NCAA considered him a transfer student, which made him ineligible to play for the Seminoles in the 1995 football season.

A SUGGESTION--The truth and rumors site seriously needs to use a different stock photo of Coach Ricky. He just looks so pissed, frustrated, and hypertensive. There must be a more flattering photo out there somewhere ? I realize that "pissed, frustrated, and hypertensive" might best personify the Bruin fanbase, and perhaps T & R feel the photo is justified. There must be a photo available of Coach immediately following a first down or field goal ? It would be interesting to hear everyones views on who the angriest Div. 1 football coach actually is ......

This is exactly what was said in the south bend tribune "In actuality, Fauria said, he was suspended by the university's Office of Residence Life and is not even allowed back on campus to so much as visit until after Christmas."

Sounds like more than grades.

To #13.
So you thindk that only ND and Stanford high standards? What about Northwestern, Vanderbillt, Duke and others.
Moss would not have been eligible at Marshall that year either. But that's where he ended up. Something in your recollection doesn't make sense.
ND is fine university, they are not the only one or two as you would like to have people believe. Your statement is why so many people jump all over ND when times are bad, in a word arrogance.

June 27, 2009  01:36 PM ET

Not really a transfer if they kick you off campus is it?
