Isles owner: Tavares is no savior

Don't expect to see John Tavares' face on a billboard overlooking the LIE just yet. Charles Wang is taking the low-key approach with his new No. 1 pick. "This is no Jesus-savior kind of thing. This ain't like getting LeBron James, as good as [Tavares] is," Wang said Friday night. "It's a big deal to us, to our fans, to him, but it's just another piece. We've got a lot of work to do." The Islanders owner says he's committed to a patient rebuilding process.

I wanted him so bad to play in his home town. Toronto.

Disappointing indeed.

Burke was all talk, but didn't do anything, he didn't even get Schenn. I would have prefer Cowen over Kadri.

Would have done better off last year, all the scouts say Stamkos is better.

Stamkos is better for sure, but Tavares is a worthy 1st overall. He deserved to be #1.

Hopefully the Leafs will just have no shame like LAK or NYI and just aim for the bottom. This has got to stop.

Taylor Hall in '10!

.....but I guess we'll take whoever goes 7 picks later.

I don't know why but those comments just seem like Wang is just burrying him already. This guy should just sell the team to someone who cares about the game of hockey because I bet if he had his way he would start a bear as his goalie.

I don't like Hall at all. Hall rarely passes.

Tavares is for sure worthy of #1.

You mean Burkes soap-box routine didnt result in any swindles? Are you serious? I thought he was going to get the 1st 5 draft picks. What a let down.

I didn't expect Tavares but I wanted him to trade to #4 and get Schenn.

If it wasn't for Devereaux in the final game of the season, the Leafs would have Schenn right now.

Matt Duchene was the real prize of the draft

Agreed. Hedman is the biggest prize.

Luckily we don't have anyone to pass to anyway.

Burke: "All hat, no cattle" as we say out west.

June 27, 2009  06:31 PM ET

Simon Depres, Carter Ashton ( are absolute steals at 29 and 30) and Scott Glennie, are the names everybody'll be talking about 10 - 15 years from now, when they're talking about this being one of the great draft years. The top five are definitely shoe-in, no brainers. Schenn is THE one in this draft, but Tavares and Hedman are instant big-time. Depres will never play a game n the minors. Don't know about all those smallish guys in the first round though - the hardest thing to read is heart - I don't see any St. Louises or Noodlemeyers in there. Either Burke knows something nobody else does, or he's completely lost it.

Thats true.

As entertaining as it was to watch Burke while he was miked up it was even better to see Garth give the little F..U nod while leaving the podium after the first pick was announced. That was FANTASTIC! Now, the sooner we get Calvin de Haan under Streit we can roll 2 PP lines. Nice!

June 27, 2009  09:19 PM ET

Actually the nod came after the 12th pick. Funny as h..ell

some advice, get off the Island as soon as you possibly can!

save your career!

The Isles will do more to screw up your development than guiding you to be one of the best or average for that matter.
