08:23 AM ET 06.27 | Moments after defenseman Scott Niedermayer told the Ducks he will rejoin them next season, General Manager Bob Murray stole the show by trading Chris Pronger to Philadelphia for a much-needed secondary scorer in right wing Joffrey Lupul, youth on defense in 2008 Flyers first-round pick Luca Sbisa, first-round picks this year and next and a third-round pick in 2010 or 2011.

Welcome Back (Joffrey), your dreams were your ticket out....

Briere could be on his way out of philly now. Too many big contracts on that team for them not to make another move.

Yeah. That trade makes very little sense from a hockey standpoint as well as financially for the Flyers.

Ouch that hurts to give up that much, there will probably be some more deals to shed some salary too. It will be interesting to see how the Flyers do with Emery and Pronger.

June 27, 2009  09:22 AM ET

Do the Flyers realize there is a cap. Now any team team they are going to trade with knows they need cap relief and will get more out of them. It's like they showed there hand to early. Plus all that for a potential 1 yr rental. Is Bobby Clarke still running this team?

I think the Flyers gave up too much for Pronger. They basically gave up 3 first round picks and Lupul for a guy who's signed for just one more year.

The funny thing is, when the Bettman announced the trade, he said "Jeffery Lupul", he doesn't even know the names of the players in the league.

Calgary traded to get the rights of Bouwemesseter, does anyone here think they are going to sign him??? I still think he is going to go to Edmonton on July 1.

He probably doesn't even know the names of his multiple personalities.

Did anyone else notice, some of the kids that came up on the stage with the Jersey's were taller than Bettman, and they were like 8.

I'm not too sure how I feel with this trade. It was only a matter of time before the Flyers traded Lupul. I'm a little lost on why the Flyers would have traded Sbisa away, that kid had potential. Pronger is a great dman but he's 35 years old... Seems like the Flyers are swinging for the fences with this offseason. The Flyers also got Ryan Dingle in this trade from the Ducks

ohhh, Dingle, a 4th liner in the AHL.

The Ducks will probably reap the benefits of the trade down the road. But from an immediate standpoint, the Flyers are the clear winners in this deal. Pronger instantly adds toughness to a defense that was not strong in its own end of the ice. His nastiness will remind Flyer fans of the good old days when they were known as the Broad Street bullies.

Even though the game has changed to allow speed to manifest itself, Pronger is still nimble enough to stay with quick skating forwards to deliver the big blow and he is still strong enough to keep the crease clear of cheery pickers around the net. Oh, he is pretty good on the PP and the PK too.

I think this trade is Holmgren's answer to the Penguins big two. Obviously the road to Lord Stanley runs through Pittsburgh for a number of years to come. Pronger will surely make an impact. He'll add the snarl they've been lacking.

I can't see Calgary signing JayBo..., not with all that salary in Phaneuf, Iginla, Jokinen, etc. He's going to Edmonton July 1, kind of surprised all it took to get his rights was Leopold (a UFA) and a 3rd. And BTW..., this is the second time that Pronger has been dealt for Lupul. First time was when Lupul was a Duck and went to Edmonton. Maybe there's a clause in Pronger's contract, saying he can't be dealt unless Lupul's going the other way?

Exactly.

June 27, 2009  03:33 PM ET

I'm sure the Flyers will sign Pronger to an extended deal but they did give up way too much for a guy that if we're lucky will give us 2 or 3 more good years.

June 27, 2009  03:43 PM ET

Gotta say I'm a little upset to see Sbisa go ...but all that will be forgot the first time Pronger knocks Malkin out as he comes across the middle with his head down! And Crosby thought he had it rough when Hatcher was back there. Good thing the Penguins won it this year because as long as Prongers in Philly they're not going anywear close to the finals!

If they don't trade Briere they will ship him to the AHL for the season. Then the salary won't count against the cap.

Then do the re-entry waviers with him but they will have to eat half of his contract. Prehaps a buyout might also be in order.
