Why would they fire him, when he is the face of the franchise. They have enough problems getting people to go to games.

Because he's not a good coach. I believe he has a very good ability to judge players and the way the game evolves. Let him be scouting director, assistant to the GM or sth. But the 'Yotes are young and there are a lot of motivation/determination problems in this team. When Gretz says at a press conference: "There is no one in this team willing to get ugly goals in front of the net". I'm sorry. You might be the greatest player ever, but you suck as a coach. There is no "willing", it should be: "you do as I say or you're out!".
We need a Keenan to make this young guys accountable and disciplined or a Tippet to teach them defensive responsibility!

Wingsfan, FYI, Grez may cost 6.5 mil but brings a lot more: corporate interest, 22.5 mil in ownership....

Grez is not a coach, he's better served leading the scouting and development of the young players.

No star player ever makes a good coach. The star players get their skill naturally and they don't have to work hard, so they aren't good teachers, because everything comes natural to them.

One of these days, the leagues (NFL, NHL, MLB, etc etc) will learn that just because someone was a superstar player does not mean they can coach/inspire people in any form. I can think of very few stars that were able to make the jump (Ditka is the only one that comes to mind, and even then the term superstar doesn't apply I think).

They don't have to work hard?? Dude are you kidding me? Most of the times star players are the hardest working players. Wayne Gretzky was always the first player on the ice for practice and the last person off. Yes a lot of it is natural talent, because no matter how hard I work at it I will never play a game in the NHL, but to say star players don't work hard is a little misguided.

Also I thought Wayne would be a great coach, because he was probably the most cerebral player to ever play the game. I think a lot of the failure had to do with a lack of genuine talent, and general support.

However I will also admit that the majority of the time success on the ice, doesn't translate into success behind the bench.

I know that, Gretzky was the hardest worker on the ice but when they tried something, they could do it, they didn't have to keep trying like most people.
