General manager Glen Sather said yesterday that the Rangers have extended a $3.25 million qualifying offer to impending restricted free agent Nik Zherdev, who disappeared down the stretch and in the playoffs. The qualifier means the Rangers will retain his rights should Zherdev opt to play in Russia, but it also means Ottawa is less inclined to accept him in a deal for Dany Heatley. The Post has been told Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray has scoffed at Sather's offer of Zherdev and Michal Rozsival.

Yeah, because they have nothing good to offer outside of Staal, and they wont offer him...

June 28, 2009  11:58 AM ET

You mean Rozival and Zherdev are not worth a 50 goal scorer, even a soft one who seems to be a me first kind of guy? LOL

The Rangers have plenty of young players they could offer that could get this deal done without including Staal, they just have not offered any of it. I'm sure one veteran contract (Gomez, Drury or Roszival), a first round pick and two youngsters from among Dubinsky, Callahan, Del Zotto, Anisimov, Gratchev, Kreider, Girardi or Sanguinetti would get the deal done but Sather is trying to steal him

Of all the players who mentioned, the only good one is Del Zotto.

I'm not saying the Leafs have better young players.

Leafs-4 Cups
Rangers-1 Cup

What is the difference between the Rangers and a bra in the last 50 years? A bra has 2 cups.

June 28, 2009  03:24 PM ET

June 28, 2009  03:46 PM ET

obviously then you're not very familiar with any other team then your terrible leafs.

Dubinsky was probably the best ranger in the playoffs and can create goals for himself

Callahan had 25 goals basically all on his own with a good passer he could probably be like a 33-35 goal scorer.

Anisimov scored 30 goals in AHL and is a great two way foward who has both offensive scoring skills and good passing ability.

Sanguinetti is a very good offensive defenseman who just needs to develop his defensive game, think of a poor man's danny boyle at this stage.

Grachiev scored 40 goals last year and was one of team canada's best players in the juniors tournament, and i think he has potential to translate his offense to the NHL in two years.

Lastly, Girardi is a solid defenseman with a good shot, he was just bad last year because he was too busy trying to cover up redden's mistakes.

I don't know if Im Ottawa I take that trade Heatly is a good goal scorer, but a locker room night mare not to mention a playoff well bust. Zherdev is young player who can score and Rosival is fairly steady on defense with a bit of an offensive up side! Who's any good on defense in OTTawa. 2 players for one headache! I would take it if I was Ottatwa !

That's a whole lot of if's. Not the Rangers should trade youth, but not adding some of these guys for a Heatley type player makes no sense. I can see not trading them for OK players, but Heatley is a pure sniper, there aren't many of those around. I mean if you are going to pay Drury and Gomez and Redden 7 mil a year, why aren't you adding Dubinsky to a deal for Heatley? Because he plays with heart, because he had a decent playoff round?

to be honest with you if i had the choice between heatley and kovalchuck i would take kovalchuck in a heartbeat, im really not interested in heatley and i think one of the main reasons that heatley is so good is because he has spezza to set him up. I think what sets him apart from kovalchuck is that kovalchuck is a 50 goal scorer a well, but he's really on his alone in atlanta making his 5 goals all the more impressive imo

Maybe heatley should have thought about the money he was signing for before he signed the paper. Now he's freaking untradable! is the even a word?

June 28, 2009  11:13 PM ET

Yes "the" is a word.
