The Chicago Blackhawks were willing to offer up Brian Campbell for Dany Heatley, but the Senators, even owing the ungrateful Heatley $4 million in bonus money, declined.

Brian Campbell was a catalyst on many plays in the playoffs ,This doesn't make sense to me.

I hope Tallon kicks himself in the ass over the Huet signing. Bad move. Dude is not a gamer. I'd resign Khabby ,but that is not likely.

He did play better in the playoffs but still made some bad mistakes. For the whole season he was at best their third best defenseman behind Keith and Seabrook.

June 28, 2009  10:15 AM ET

Brian Campbell is way overrated. Always has been. In San Jose he had 1 point in 14 playoff games, Chicago I think he had two. He's bad defensively, and not that great offensively. Huet wasn't a bad signing, but giving 7 million to Brian Campbell to be a third line defenseman was a terrible decision. Lidstrom, LIDSTROM gets paid 7 million, Campbell shouldn't get paid anymore than 4.

Campbell became a free agent at the perfect time. He was the best D-man available and anyone who got him was going to over pay. He did bring some speed to the back line, but for 7 million a year, the Hawks need better D and a little more offense from him.

June 28, 2009  10:32 AM ET

Why would they trade Campbell for Heatley??? The Chicago GM said that the Campbell signing was a mistake. Before the playoffs he was their 6th D-man and only played the PP. Campbell did have a good playoffs but was terrible in the regular season.

Agreed. Smooth-skating puck-moving able defensemen are hard to find. They're essential to today's game and when you have one you should hang on to him!

To bad Campbell sucks, everyone on this site seems to think Campbell is good, he was terrible this year and with the Sharks he was only an ok defenseman. Campbell was only good in Buffalo.

Just because the Leafs failed to get him does not mean he sucks....

Why would anyone want him, he is way overpaid and he sucks.

Campbell pulled a McCabe - good player until he signed an inflated contract, then shrivelled under the microscope.

Ottawa will wait.

Why rush?

Heatley has to play in Ottawa. He already has a shaky reputation and if he decides to sit and sulk he only scares other GMs off more. Murray can wait until the trade deadline to move him if he needs to because GMs are only offering the Sens garbage for a 50 goal scorer.

This trade makes plenty of sense the Sens wouldnt have to sign Havlat and would be able to give Barker more PP like he wants. And Heatley has less years left on his contract than Campbell does. Tallon would have made a great move if this had gone through.

Of course this deal makes sense for the Hawks, it is a great deal for the Hawks, but it is a terrible deal for the Sens.

Yeah and because the defence in Buffalo aren't exactly good he looked like an allstar.

I want to see the result of this Heatley crap. I bet Melynk has been tearing Bettman a new one over this. Not fair to the team.

The best D that summer was without a doubt Mark Streit anyway. By a mile.
