Ravens' Newsome returning to Alabama?

The speculation linking former Alabama great and current Baltimore Ravens executive Ozzie Newsome to the Tide's athletic director's job has been ongoing for several years. That speculation has been ratcheted up a notch or two of late as current AD Mal Moore has come under fire for the NCAA sanctions levied against the school in the textbook scandal. While Newsome refuses to do anything but praise the job Moore has done -- "Look at what he's done and how well rounded this program is. The facilities that we have, the seating at the stadium, what else can you ask for?" -- he has also steadfastly refused to close the door on what many anticipate would be a triumphant return to Tuscaloosa at some point in the future.

Saban and Newsome. Now that's an odd couple. Newsomes always been 100% class and by all accounts on the up and up. Saban's, well, Saban.

June 29, 2009  07:59 AM ET

Saban will at some point leave the Tide for dead, getting Ozzie into the fold now will allow him to reign in Saban's excesses and establish himself sufficiently to keep the Faithful (tm) mollified and the Program on track when Saban reveals himself as the rat he is.

Best thing that will happen to Alabama since the Bear if they can pull it off...

June 29, 2009  08:43 AM ET

Saban is nothing but class. He's rebuilt the Tide back to where is was. And THIS is how they repay him? Sending a Bama Croonie to stuff him and claim his success? THIS IS WHY THE TIDE will be back to losing if they alienate Saban. True to form Saban brought a winner to Alabama, LISTEN UP Rednecks, You need to treat Mr Saban with Respect. -Nuff said

Nick Saban is a snake **** bag. Ozzie would bring some class.

June 29, 2009  08:59 AM ET

B.R., Class have never been used to describe Saban, just ask any of his former employer Mich. State and LSU just to name two. The guy's EGO becomes tooo big at any school, just wait he will turn in 'Bama at a moment's notice, which is what he has always done.

From the NFL side of things, this would be a huge blow to the Ravens if Newsome left. Look at their drafts and the vast majority of picks have been great picks.

June 29, 2009  09:06 AM ET

Saban has NOW defined Bama as a winner. NOW everyone is trying to beat the man down. He's had a couple of hiccups like Mich State but LSU didn't treat him correctly and he left, that was and is the bottom line.

Bama should put this to rest and say what needs to be said....."We don't need Ozzie" Bottom line.

Seriously??? Don't confuse being able to win football games with having class.

LSU treated Saban fine... We would have given him anything he wanted... He wanted to test the waters in the NFL and I dont blame him... And unlike most Tiger fans, I dont hate him for going to Bama.... He even said he made a mistake by going to the Dolphins... IMO, Saban is going to be at Bama as long as he keeps winning.. I believe its his last college job... And he has a big EGO as all the other coaches, including Miles

According to B.R. if you're winning then you have class.

Sorry but in Sabans case they are mutually exclusive. Mich St., LSU and don't forget Miami. All very classy on his part.

He's a piece of crap and with Ozzie on board he will either clean up the act or get run off. The latter is probably B.R.'s concern. Because, you know, he's winning.

June 29, 2009  09:32 AM ET

Let's face it, the ONLY thing Saban did was win and get a BETTER job. I'm sure with some of these posts, that when you guys were promoted from Fry guy to major burger flipper that MOST of you failed miserably. Such with Saban in Miami. No harm no foul. I never said winner gives you class, cowboys case in point. But Saban has class and is a winner.

He lays in all out there, either you like the guy or don't but YOU have to respect that he is a winner. Now everybody quit being jealous and GET OVER IT!! -Nuff said

Funny thing is Saban and Ozzy are friends. Ozzy helped get Saban to Bama.

June 29, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Saban also has former members of his staff from LSU, MSU, and the Dolphins. Man, they must all really hate him.

June 29, 2009  09:38 AM ET

This would be a horible loss for the Ravens. Please don't go Ozzie!

First of all they put me on drinks after fries but I always held out hope for burger flipper. Alas, it was not in the cards.

Second, no one said anything about him going to Miami was a problem nor that he failed at it but rather the complete lack of class he has shown in how he goes about his business. I, like most, would jump at a chance to take a job that is deemed either a step up or a new challenge.

third, have you not been paying attention to the Cowboys. They lose AND their owner/gm is a moron. No one knows this better than me as a Cowboys fan. But I never defended them in the 90's with lame excuses about how much class they have just because they were winning SB's.

Now, as former fry guy and shafted burger guy I must get back to running my own business. It's a tough economy out there and since it is my business I should probably pay attention. My employees would like to get paid.

BR - you trashin' my Cowboys?

June 29, 2009  09:42 AM ET

Legaltider82 FINALLY someone with some REAL knowledge on Saban and not a buncha Haters. This guy lives and breath's BAMA ball. He has made his mark and done it his way, sure it made alot of people unhappy, but those are the people who would trade their left nutt to have him coaching their team.

Let's face it, Ozzy going to bama would neither hurt nor help bama. We are making our mark everyday in College Sports with or without Ozzy. That's all I'm saying.

Ride the coattails baby ride the coattails. You don't have to like him to get some juicy scraps from his table.

June 29, 2009  09:46 AM ET

I don't trash the cowboys their owner is doing a good enough job himself of running that organization into the ground, EXCEPT on the business side which they are doing great. That's the problem for fans is, he dogs the cowboys since JJ left and ruins it for his fans, but I digress this is a totally different topic.

Ozzy is doing great in Baltimore he should stay there, jobs aren't easy to come by.

Listen up B.R. Take your redneck fryguy burger flipper cowboys insults over to the NFL threads. We don't take too kindly to newbies dropping insults on our peeps here in NCAAF.

June 29, 2009  10:54 AM ET

Hey Bubba who u? The king of threads..?? I didn't insult, but you obviously are..... As for the taking too kindly I voiced my opinion and that's that. So Hoss, get over it, I will NOT get into a insult laced discussion with you on a message board. Now back to topic:

I say this is all started by the SEC to get news away from Lane Kiffin. Either that or draw up some interest in the Ravens. Y'alls choice.
