Manuel: Mets need to add big bat

Jerry Manuel is not banging down Omar Minaya's door begging for help . . . yet. But the Mets manager is definitely getting closer. In his strongest statement of the season, Manuel said before last night's game that if the Mets slip below .500 -- a mark they dropped to with their 4-2 loss to the Yankees -- Minaya needs to make a trade for a big bat.

The Red Sox Julio Lugo is available for a half eaten bag of Potato Chips .

With all those injuries to their RBI-men, it's going to take more than 1 additional "big bat" to keep up with the phillies.

I changed my name.

The Mets are beyond help!

and here come the philly fans again, they were pretty quiet while they were on that skid. now that they are winning again they come to take shots at the mets on a mets forum.

1 bat is NOT going to help. When a team loses 3 of it's 4 All-Star caliber players they are not going to be able to replace them. The key here is Reyes. If he can't come back, and be his old self it won't matter period. Once he and Beltran are back then they can address a "big bat" at first. If neither can make it back or make it back in a "timely" fashion there is no reason to make a move. The only given is that Delgado is pretty much done for the season. The other concern is payroll...Freddy Coupons wasn't adding payroll in the offseason, so why should anyone expect that he's going to do a significant upgrade in salary now ?

Philly fans weren't too concerned about our recent losing skid, we played probably the worst ball we could play, and the shyyte-hole Muts still can't take the division lead. Tell the Muts management to keep overspending for talent!

LOL! Don't think you can say the Philly fans have been quiet even during a slump. I wasn't really taking a shot anyway, that was just more of sympathy for where this team is right now.

Well the Phils have had to deal with injuries to Hamels, Meyers, Ibanez, Lidge, Howard, and Utley took some time to recover from surgery. It is a long season but even at this point the clutch/ choke atmospheres for each club is pretty evident.

June 29, 2009  09:37 AM ET

If no one gets healthy soon, a Big Bat ain't gonna make a difference.

So, let's say that you're correct and the Mets, minus three of their best four offensive weapons, starting pitchers and their set-up man, are a terrible team.

If the Phillies are only 2.5 games ahead of them (without Ibanez) what does that make them? Marginally less sucky? Terrible, but not that terrible?

I'm just curious to see your logic here, as the Philly fans seem to think that their teams performance is perfectly acceptable (at least not worthy of ridicule), yet the Mets' performance is not. To me, both teams suck, but the Mets have some hope of improving when the better part of their team comes off the DL.

Huff may still be available.

What's really sad is how bad the National League East, as a whole, is playing this year.

I agree - very disappointing in general. Hopefully, they'll (all of them) start to get it together after the all-star break.

Some people just make stupid comments, I am not a fan of either team, although I do like the Mets way more than the Phillies, but how is any team suppossed to replace basically the entire middle of their order mid season? You lose Delgado, Beltran, and Reyes all at the same time. I mean the fact that they are even in contention is something considering they are running a line up out that includes Angel Reyes, Alex Cora, Jeremy Reed...Ryan Church is batting clean up, that tells you something about the condition the team is in

June 29, 2009  10:14 AM ET

Mets and Sox should talk....Jose Reyes for Bucholz Hunter Jones and Jed Lowrie. The sox lineup would vastly improve (providing Reyes returns) and The mets get a potential top of the rotation starter a hard throwing reliever and a young SS

Totally agree! They need more than one big bat; two or three may help, but I think the Mets are beyond repair now.

Who would've thought, at the beginning of the season, that Gary Sheffield would be the Mets' primary (only) source of power throughout the first half of the season???

June 29, 2009  10:46 AM ET

This is all wrong. You see, Charlie just wants an actual "big bat," like a cricket bat. This way, his hitters won't swing and miss so often. Get it?
