Stoudemire wants big commitment from Suns

Amare Stoudemire's camp has not heard from any other NBA team about the possibility of acquiring him or any interest in securing his future with a contract extension. Stoudemire's agent, Charles Grantham, said he would like to hear a commitment from one team in particular - the Suns. The commitment Stoudemire is seeking from the Suns is more than just being told he won't be traded. He wants a contract extension when he is eligible later this summer. Grantham considers Stoudemire a maximum-salary player worth an extension averaging more than $20 million per season.

No D, not a maximum player deal in the makings.

June 29, 2009  07:38 AM ET

He certainly has the positioning to do it. The Suns could bite, that way it guarantees they get something and not nothing in 2010.

June 29, 2009  07:52 AM ET

No matter what you may think his faults are, he is the Man in Phoenix. Nash is getting older, if they lose him it is another nail in their coffin. Unless they have a good trade on the horizon.

He is going to put up some monster games next season, whoever he plays for.

Big Contract or reasonable contract he still needs to play D better. Sure he can get the monster block but it's obvious that his effort is lacking on a consistant basis.

QUOTE(#3):

Nash is getting older

I think Amare is mroe valuable than Nash - but their aren't vary many alternatives to both players...they are pretty much destined for a huge transformation (a continued one).

I know Nash has been better in his 30's but if he gets a lengthy/pricey contract it could turn out to be a very bad investment.

Steve Kerr has gotta man up and stop being so loyal and nice. Gifting gifts...whats the point of cap room if there is nothing left to entice players to come there...this may be one of the longer rebuilding efforts in terms of getting to where they once were not so long ago.

June 29, 2009  08:02 AM ET

The Suns are confuse. They don't know what direction they want to go in. The question is should they keep Amare or trade him. Either way they have to sign him to a big contract or else they will lose him for nothing. If they trade him then trade him for some promising player and not just give him away. The Suns has become the Memphis Grzzlies in decision making. They are helping out other teams.

June 29, 2009  08:11 AM ET

There will be enough teams with money in 2010 he will get a contract regardless.
Atleast 4 teams with enough money to sign 2 free agents to max deals look else where you will end up in a better team.

June 29, 2009  08:16 AM ET

Amare is not a max contract guy. He is very talented but he gets a lot of his points off of Nash. If Nash leaves, I wouldn't be surprised if Amare's production dropped off (especially shooting percentage). Nash and Amare complement each other very well.

The problem is Amare will leave if he doesn't get a max contract. Teams will be all over him in free agency (i.e. the Suns would have no chance to sign him and will lose him for nothing).

June 29, 2009  08:16 AM ET

The Suns are in complete rebuild mode (or should be) - their best bet will be to orchestrate a sign-and-trade for Amare, their most valuable asset, in an attempt to get much younger. They should send him to Oklahoma City for their 2010 first round pick, plus their own first round pick (which OC owns). Add in Collison & Watson to make the salaries work out. Then deal Nash to Portland for Bayless, Blake, Fernandez and Webster, if they'll bite. And then see if you can get anything for Richardson - Philadelphia is short on outside shooting - maybe they can get T. Young if they take back Dalembert. Then you've got a young nucleus.

I can understand why the agent is pushing for financial security now. Stoudemire has had several injuries including microfracture surgery so there is a high probability another knee injury will end his career or slow him down significantly. In light of that securing him a long term contract from any team is in the best interest of Amare and his agent... the same reason GM's are hesitant to give Amare the max.... however if his knee holds up to the end of next season max dollas will be flowing to him like he's never seen a surgeon... it's a dirty game but hey... money talks... I wouldn't be shocked if Amare fakes some injury just to sit out next season if he doesn't get the extension...

June 29, 2009  08:38 AM ET

i still don't understand y they want 2 trade him. I know hes worthless on the denfensive end but who on that team isn't. its like kerr whats 2 bring down the whole team b4 he gets canned.

June 29, 2009  08:49 AM ET

maybe they need to let go of nash and build the team around amare for a change.
they should keep pavlovic from the cavs deal and get a more defensive center like
that backup from orlando. now that's a tough phoenix team.

June 29, 2009  08:51 AM ET

I'm on the fence here. I would keep Amare but I'm not sure he's worth a max contract. I'd pay him, and pay him well but do I look at him and see a $100 million player? No, not really.

Anyway, I think the Suns are going to continue this movement they are on and trade him. I just hope they get something back of some value to them.

June 29, 2009  09:16 AM ET

I love Amare as a player but not only has he been injured too much in the past few years, he's too inconsistent to warrant a max contract. I can understand he wants to be secured a long and large contract but I don't think he's worth more than $15 mil/year.

June 29, 2009  09:22 AM ET

Barring a blockbuster trade, Stoudemire is without question, the future of the Suns. The question is; at what cost? Amare's current deal pays him $15 million. Is he worth a 25% pay raise. I don't think so, but the Suns cannot trade Amare for a box of sox.

June 29, 2009  09:31 AM ET

Portland will not trade for old ass Steve Nash. They are sitting pretty with their current roster. They need big man (Greg Oden) to stay help and develop and they will be fine. If he doesn't look for them to go after a big man but oft injured, no defense, one dimensional Stoudemire isn't him -IMHO.

June 29, 2009  09:32 AM ET

Amare is not a franchise player. Not only the lack of D, but is poor rebounder for such an explosive athlete and has fairly or not, benefited greatly from Nash's abilities.

I really hope they don't dump him in Houston, where Scola/Landry are doing (and would continue to do) a good job of backing up Yao, doing his dirty work, and covering all his defensive limitations.

June 29, 2009  09:36 AM ET

please trade him to the warriors (but no stephon curry this time sorry)

June 29, 2009  09:37 AM ET

If Amar'e wants a max deal, I want to see a double-digit rebounding average every year and evidence that he can guard the top power forward/centers in the League.

20 mil a season and no defense?! He's almost as bad as Hedo for asking 11mil for a player who sometimes doesn't show up in games.
