Mehmet Okur is "leaning toward opting out" of his contract with the Jazz and could make the decision official as soon as today, Okur's agent, Marc Fleisher, said Sunday. Okur would be opting out of $9 million he is due to make this season in order to become a free agent, raising the stakes for the Jazz as they attempt to keep their starting center, who also was the NBA's sixth-best three-point shooter last season.

He would be a perfect fit for the CAVS, a big and slow guy who can shoot from the perimeter.

I thought they had that in Z.

Why would he opt out at this time of bad economy? $9 million is a lot of money for him. I don't know what team could use him for the price of $10 million a year.

Okur is a tough cover...BZ is so unreliable, he does have post moves, being 7'3 i swear he shud average like 50 lay-ups/paint moves a game....instead he takes jumpers.

He'll definitely get a longer contract from Utah or force a sign a trade. This is no brainer for him and his agent as Utah stands to be the sore loser in this but it's all business.

June 29, 2009  08:39 AM ET

On second thought a sign and trade with the Knicks for David Lee would be good for both teams.

June 29, 2009  08:56 AM ET

You would expect that the Jazz would keep him even with the opting out.

I don't think Utah can risk losing Boozer, Millsap, and Okur. I think the Jazz are going to have to dig deeper, and keep at least 2 of the 3.

I agree 100%. The jazz seem like they don't want Deron Williams to get a title. You've got to spend it to win it. They did these same cornball moves in the Stockton-Malone era. They are just cheap, and they play in a market where cream of the crop free agents don't dare come play.

Okur is going to be a very desirable commodity- whether it be
this year or next......but I do agree with Guam- he likely won't be
given more than his 9m....I'd wait one more year when evenryone
and their mothers will have cap space

That being said-
how about trading Okur & Milsap to Miami for Oneal, Haslem, Cook & Beasley? (or some combo)

Let Millsap walk, keep Boozer and Okur. Forget luxury tax, pay it. You got to pay to win.

On a side note I just found out summer league starts on July 11th.... Eddy Curry better be there...

utahs going to keep all 3 and then trade boozer for some real talent

June 29, 2009  02:46 PM ET

It seems like everybody is leaving Utah

I would feel the same way, if I thought it would make a difference in his play.

This leads me to believe that maybe Utah will keep all 3, if only for a year. Management has already stated they'd go into luxury tax to keep Milsap. So, let the market (Detroit, Portland, OKC) determine the offer sheet that Utah matches to keep Milsap. Then, let Okur and Boozer's play determine who gets the big contract to stay in Utah next season.

Ozapoet, you are a doofus knowitall. What do you know about the Jazz or the market? If you're going to make idiotic comments, have some facts to back them up. First, with their payroll right at the cap number and 13 players under contract, they "ain't cheap", they''re strapped. Second, you ever been to SLC? If not, shut up! I am a non-Mormon, Jazz season ticket holder who loves the city and the lifestyle. Oh, idiot, by the way the Jazz aren't trying to get Deron Williams a title, they try to get the team one. You're a jerk!!
